Overview

The small town of Jiufen in Taiwan is located in the mountainous region of Ruifang, a suburb of New Taipei. It has long captivated tourists with its incredible atmosphere and favorable location near the ocean. Once it was the only place in the country where huge deposits of gold were discovered. After the end of the gold rush, Jiufen, contrary to expectations, turned not into a ghost town, but into a vibrant and successful tourist center.

Highlights

Jiufen village
Jiufen also spelled Jioufen or Chiufen is a seaside mountain area in Ruifang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan. During the first years of the Qing Dynasty, the isolated village housed nine families, thus the village would request "nine portions" every time shipments arrived from town. Later Kau-hun (meaning "nine portions" in Hokkien) would become the name of the village. Jiufen also became popular in 2001 due to its resemblance to the downtown in the Japanese anime movie Spirited Away by Studio Ghibli. Jiufen soon attracted Japanese tourists. Many Japanese travel magazines and guide books about Taiwan introduced Jiufen. It became a must-visit place among Japanese tourists. However, Miyazaki himself denied that Jiufen was the model city of the movie. At present, Jiufen is a renowned tourist attraction representative of Taiwan. It draws many tourists from Taipei during the weekends.
Pingxi District
Pingxi District, is a rural district in New Taipei, Taiwan. The source of the Keelung River is in Jingtong, which is inside Pingxi District. It was an important coal mining town in the early 20th century. Its population of 4,872 as of January 2016 is the smallest among the districts of New Taipei City.
Shifen Waterfall
Shifen Waterfall is probably Taiwan’s most famous and has been nicknamed “Little Niagara” because the horseshoe shape mimics North America’s most famous waterfall. Shifen Waterfall is a scenic waterfall located in Pingxi District, New Taipei City, Taiwan, on the upper reaches of the Keelung River. The falls' total height is 20 meters (66 ft) and 40 meters (130 ft) in width, making it the broadest waterfall in Taiwan.[1] It is a cascade waterfall in which the water flows in one direction and the rock is sloped in the opposite.
Taipei
Taipei, officially Taipei City, is the capital and a special municipality of Taiwan (officially the Republic of China, ROC). Located in northern Taiwan, Taipei City is an enclave of the municipality of New Taipei City that sits about 25 km southwest of the northern port city of Keelung. Most of the city lies in the Taipei Basin, an ancient lakebed. The basin is bounded by the relatively narrow valleys of the Keelung and Xindian rivers, which join to form the Tamsui River along the city's western border.
