Overview

Portofino is a beautiful resort that has long been the home of the rich and the famous. Originally a billet for Genoa's merchant seamen, by the turn of the twentieth century it was a quiet, though very beautiful, fishing village. To add to its mystique, Portofino has a history buried in myth.

Highlights

Castello Doria Portovenere
Majestic, panoramic, a witness of centuries of history: the Doria Castle (Castello Doria) is one of the most striking features of Portovenere. It stands on a rocky plateau, featuring steep walls and mighty archways in local stone. The Doria Castle of Portovenere is a proper example of Genoese military architecture, even though it has undergone some structural modifications due to the progress of fortifications and firearms. When you first glance at Castello Doria, it looks like one solid piece. But it actually consists of 2 distinct parts positioned at different levels and enclosed in large Cyclopean walls.
Palmaria island
Palmaria is an Italian island situated in the Ligurian Sea, at the westernmost end of the Gulf of La Spezia. Measuring 1.6 square kilometers (0.6 sq mi), it is the largest island of an archipelago of three closely spaced islands jutting out south from the mainland at Portovenere. The other islands, Tino, and the tiny Tinetto lie further south. In 1997, the archipelago, together with Portovenere and the Cinque Terre, was designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Portovenere
Porto Venere (until 1991 Portovenere) is a town and comune (municipality) located on the Ligurian coast of Italy in the province of La Spezia. It comprises the three villages of Fezzano, Le Grazie and Porto Venere, and the three islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. In 1997 Porto Venere and the villages of Cinque Terre were designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Itinerary

08:00

After arriving at the cruise terminal you will be transferred to Portovenere. This Town has ancient origins and takes its name (Portus Veneris) from a temple dedicated to Venus. You enter into the old town through a medieval gate that leads to the central narrow alleyway.

This alleyway offers endless possibilities to taste and buy local delicatessens (focaccia, fresh basil, and fish) as well as local souvenirs.
In Portovenere, you can see the magnificent Doria Castle, San Lorenza Church, and the beautiful black and white Romanesque San Pietro Church.

In front of Portovenere, you can admire (and reach by boat) the island of Palmaria and the smaller islands of Tino and Tinetto which are part of the Marine Protected Area. Then transfer to the lovely old town of Lerici which sits on the eastern end of the Gulf of Poets.

Very important is its magnificent castle which rises on a rock promontory overlooking the bay of Lerici and is considered one the most impressive and beautiful fortifications in all of Liguria.

At the end of the tour transfer to the port.
