Overview

The little island of Runde has got 150 regular inhabitants, but from February to August every year, more than 500.000 birds come to Runde for the nesting season. Around 80 species have been proved nesting here, and more than 230 species have been observed in total. The nature areas on Runde are vulnerable, important, and interesting for research. Runde has also been called "Treasure Island" because of the finds of gold coins from the wrecked Dutch ship "Akerendam" from 1725.

Alesund

Ålesund is a port town on the west coast of Norway, at the entrance to the Geirangerfjord. It’s known for the art nouveau architectural style in which most of the town was rebuilt after a fire in 1904, as documented at the Jugendstilsenteret museum. There are panoramic views of Ålesund’s architecture, the surrounding archipelago and fjords from the Mount Aksla lookout.

Runde

A short distance southwest of Ålesund, on the island of Runde, is the most southerly seabird cliff in Norway. Known to many as "B bird island," this remarkable site serves as the nesting-place for some 500,000 birds. Included in the tiny island's 220 different species of birds are its most famous inhabitants, the puffins, drawn here by the plentiful supply of fish that spawn close to the island each year.
