Starting in the historic heart of Hamburg you will start at the Town Hall, built-in 1886 to 1897, its impressive architecture dominates the center of the city. Then on to St Nikolai church which was the world’s tallest building from 1874 to 1876, it remains Hamburg’s second-tallest structure (after the TV tower). Mostly destroyed in WW2 by allied bombings, you can take a glass lift to a 76.3m-high viewing platform inside the surviving spire for views of Hamburg’s center (tickets not included).

In the very heart of the Hamburgs, medieval city is Trost bridge a small, historic bridge that crosses the Nikolaifleet, one of many narrow inlets connecting the city’s docklands to the River Elbe. It is believed that it earned its name as a picturesque point on criminals’ journeys to the local courthouse. It’s said that for many, the view of the river was the last comfort to them before they were sent to the gallows.

Spend time in the UNESCO listed Speicherstadt, the world’s largest contiguous warehouse complex built in 1883 before heading to see the modern face of Hamburg at The Elbphilharmonie. Hamburg’s newest cultural landmark officially opened in January 2017. An attraction for visitors from across the world, the concert hall lies on the banks of the Elbe and is surrounded on three sides by water.
