Highlights

Argostoli
Argostoli is a town and a former municipality on the island of Kefalonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform, it is part of the municipality Kefalonia, of which it is a municipal unit. It has been the capital and administrative center of Kefalonia since 1757, following a population shift down from the old capital of Agios Georgios (also known as Kastro) to take advantage of the trading opportunities provided by the sheltered bay upon which Argostoli sits. Argostoli developed into one of the busiest ports in Greece, leading to prosperity and growth. The municipal unit has an area of 157.670 km2. The 2011 census recorded a population of 10,633 in the Argostoli municipal unit.

Itinerary

10:00

The tour continues through the resort area of Lassi and the beautiful Livathos villages to the beautiful village of Koukoumelata, arguably the most beautiful, picturesque, superb and impressive village you can find in Kefalonia. Koukoumelata is hugely considered as the crown jewel among the villages in Kefalonia perhaps because of its unrivalled beauty and colour. It boasts of colourful structures, gardens, impressive town planning and street layout. Some of the best views of the island and of neighbouring island Zante can be seen from the traditional village of Katsro.

The village lies on a hill above the valley of Livathos and leads up to the Venetian fortress of St. George built in the sixteenth century (Visit inside – Optional). The area around the Castle is well worth exploring with remains of pre-earthquake village houses and the remains of the medieval church of Evangelistria built in 1420. The remains of the church of St. Theodori are located south west of the castle and this church may well be even older than Evangelistria.

We continue back to Argostoli and the famous Koutavos Lagoon, which lies at the head of Argostoli Bay and is a nature reserve for wildlife, including the Caretta Turtle and various waterfowl. We’ll then travel along the coastal road, passing in front of De Bosset Bridge.
