Overview

The markets and bazaars of Kyrgyzstan are more than just a place for shopping. Historically, markets have also been places of friendship, communication, and cultural exchange. The bazaar in Osh is a real oriental bazaar, stretching over several quarters along the western Ak-Bura riverside. The Jayma Bazaar is more than 3000 years old and probably the biggest market in Central Asia. Once you get there, you will immediately want to buy everything that you see and eat it right there. People in Osh say that the Osh bazaar has everything. Tourists adore Jayma Bazaar, and locals consider it an essential part of their life. Traders come here not only from all over Kyrgyzstan, but also from China, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.

Highlights

Jayma Bazaar
Osh Bazaar, one of the region’s oldest marketplaces, represents the trading legacy of the Silk Road. For more than 2,000 years, traders converged here from across the continent. Come and you can still feel the unique blend of cultures and humanity as you wander its alleys — flush with fresh produce, spices, nuts, dried fruit, local textiles, traditional clothing, handicrafts, and much more.
Osh
Osh is the second-largest city in Kyrgyzstan, located in the Fergana Valley in the south of the country and often referred to as the "capital of the south". It is the oldest city in the country and has served as the administrative center of the Osh Region since 1939. The city has several monuments, including one to the southern Kyrgyz "queen" Kurmanjan Datka and one of the few remaining statues of Lenin. A Russian Orthodox church, reopened after the demise of the Soviet Union, the largest mosque in the country (situated beside the bazaar), and the 16th-century Rabat Abdul Khan Mosque can be found here.

Meet your guide at the agreed meeting point near the bazaar or at your centrally located hotel in Osh.

An unprepared tourist’s eyes run up from the chaos reigning here: crowds of people, merchants, and carts, assorted counters but your local guide will help you figure it out and enjoy walking and exploring the bazaar.

The bazaar in Osh is considered one of the most picturesque and largest bazaars in terms of turnover in Central Asia. In addition, it has existed in one place for more than 2000 years, even from the time when one of the branches of the legendary Silk Road passed through Osh.

Taste delicious-looking seasonal fruits: juicy apples, peaches, sweet grapes grown under the generous oriental sun, yellow melons, and striped watermelons.

Try some dried fruits and nuts: dried raisins of different varieties, apricots, pistachios, walnuts, almonds, and peanuts. Fragrant tortillas just from tandoor offered by brisk women in bright colorful dresses. You can’t pass by kebabs, traditional pilaf, samsa, and beshbarmak, smelling so that drooling.

You will also visit the National Instruments section, Clothing Area, Spice Market, Uzbek fabrics and fabrics for toshoks (sitting mats) and other household use, Woodmasters and Forging Craftsmen, and much more.

Say goodbye to your guide after a saturated walk through the ancient bazaar.
