Highlights

Izola
Izola is an old fishing town in southwestern Slovenia on the Adriatic coast of the Istrian peninsula. It is the seat of the Municipality of Izola. Its name originates from Italian Isola, which means 'island'.
Koper
Koper is the fifth largest city in Slovenia. Located in the Istrian region in the southwestern part of the country, approximately five kilometres south of the border with Italy and 20 kilometres from Trieste, Koper is the largest coastal city in the country. It is bordered by the satellite towns of Izola and Ankaran. With a unique ecology and biodiversity, it is considered an important natural resource. The city's Port of Koper is the major contributor to the economy of the Municipality of Koper. With only one per cent of Slovenia having a coastline, the influence that the Port of Koper also has on tourism was a factor in Ankaran deciding to leave the municipality in a referendum in 2011 to establish its own. The city is a destination for a number of Mediterranean cruising lines. Koper is the main urban centre of the Slovenian Istria, with a population of about 25,000. Ales Brzan is the current mayor, serving since 2018.
Parenzana
The Parenzana in Italian and Croatian or Porečanka in Slovene is one of the nicknames of a defunct narrow gauge railway (operating between 1902 and 1935) between Trieste and Poreč (at that time Parenzo, hence the name Parenzana), in present-day Italy, Slovenia and Croatia. Although all tracks were removed, a large part of other railway infrastructure (embankments, cuttings, bridges, viaducts, etc.) survives today. According to the Croatian association Porečanka it could still be possible to reconstruct the railway at 94% of the original route. Several milestones with the inscription "T.P.C." still stand along the former route. Most of railway stations survive as well, mostly they were converted into homes, workshops, warehouses. The former "Savudrija station" in Valica still carries the original sign with an inscription "Salvore". All 9 tunnels also still exist. Some of them were used to grow mushrooms. The others were and still are used by foot travellers and cyclists as "shortcuts". Probably the most famous of such tunnels is the tunnel Valeta between Strunjan and Portorož.
Škocjanski Zatok
Škocjanski Zatok is the largest brackish wetland nature reserve in Slovenia. It is an island of landscape between the hill of Sermin, the motorway, the railway and the city of Koper. Newly built structures respect the sensitive environment, while offering firsthand experience of nature together with an interesting architectural experience.

Itinerary

09:00

You will be met at the port and guided you to your air conditioned transportation ready to commence your tour.

During this tour you have the choice whether to walk or cycle around Koper and its surrounding areas. Your tour will begin at Taverna Koper – a onetime salt warehouse dating back to the 15th century. The taverna is now used to host important events in Koper and still retains its medieval architecture. You will then travel through the salt swamps of Skocjanskizatok where you will see a wide variety of rare flora and fauna. Your destination is the old fishing village of Izola. The village is full of Roman and Venetian architecture and provides a beautiful and peaceful retreat from the busy port areas.

If on foot you will continue to Livade and Jagoje through to the Bay of Simon where you can take some amazing photographs of the breath taking scenery before heading back to Izola where you will have plenty of free time to explore the village.

If you wish to cycle from Izola your guide will take you along the famous Parenzana – a trail alongside a narrow gauge railway line which goes through olive groves, tunnels and valleys and provides an interesting way to see Slovenia’s coastline and is perfect for the adventures.
