Highlights

Ala Too Square
Ala-Too Square is the central square in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The square was built in 1984 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic, at which time a massive statue of Lenin was placed in the square's center. The square was known as Lenin Square until Kyrgyzstan gained its Independence from the USSR in 1991. The statue of Lenin was moved in 2003 to a smaller square in the city, and a new statue called Erkindik (Freedom) was installed in its place. Later in 2011 it was replaced by a statue of Manas, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Kyrgyzstan's independence. The square serves as a place for state events and celebrations. In 2008, it was the site of a memorial ceremony for world-renowned Kyrgyz writer Chinghiz Aitmatov.
Bishkek
Bishkek, formerly Pishpek and Frunze, is the capital and largest city of Kyrgyzstan (Kyrgyz Republic). Bishkek is also the administrative centre of the Chuy Region. The province surrounds the city, although the city itself is not part of the province, but rather a province-level unit of Kyrgyzstan. It is also near the Kazakhstan-Kyrgyzstan border. In 1825, the Khanate of Kokand established the fortress of "Pishpek" to control local caravan routes and to collect tribute from Kyrgyz tribes. On 4 September 1860, with the approval of the Kyrgyz, Russian forces led by Colonel Apollon Zimmermann destroyed the fortress. In 1868, a Russian settlement was established on the site of the fortress under its original name, "Pishpek". It lay within the General Governorship of Russian Turkestan and its Semirechye Oblast. Bishkek is a city of wide boulevards and marble-faced public buildings combined with numerous Soviet-style apartment blocks surrounding interior courtyards. There are also thousands of smaller privately built houses, mostly outside the city centre. Streets follow a grid pattern, with most flanked on both sides by narrow irrigation channels, watering innumerable trees to provide shade in the hot summers.
Bishkek Central Mosque
The central mosque is the largest in Kyrgyzstan. It is the exact copy of Kocatepe mosque that is located in Ankara, Turkey. This is the main architectural attraction of Bishkek built on the spot of Issyk-Kul cinema, the historical centre of the capital. The choice of location caused controversy; before the construction of the theatre, there was a Christian cemetery. The construction of the mosque started in 2012 and the final works were finished in 2018. The interior also resembles the copy of Kocatepe mosque. The only difference is the number of tiers. The original mosque has four tiers while the central mosque of Bishkek has only three. The mosque has a large hall for prayers with the capacity of more than 600 people. More than 6 thousand people gather in the mosque for Friday prayers.
Bishkek Oak Park
Bustling central park featuring fountains, lots of green space & an open-air museum of sculptures.
Bishkek Victory Square
Victory Square is a public square in the city of Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. It is dedicated to the Victory in the Victory over Nazi Germany. It was created in 1985, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
Erkindik Avenue
Erkindik Boulevard is a large and beautiful street that resembles a park. Young mothers with their babies often come here to walk, as it is a shady, cool place even on hot summer days. There are many benches where you can sit and people-watch while enjoying some ice cream.
Kyrgyz Opera and Ballet Theater
The Opera House, or more officially the Theater of Opera and Ballet, hosts great classical performances. It has already staged over 200 productions, including national masterpieces and world classics. Here you can see well-known productions, such as Manas and Swan Lake.
Osh Bazaar
Osh Bazaar is one of the largest bazaars in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. It is located on the west side of town and is not far from the Western Bus Station. At Osh Bazaar, one can buy food products, almost any common household goods, clothes, souvenirs, and even musical instruments.
