Highlights

Borovoe Lake
Borovoe Lake is one prominent lake of a group of lakes that share the same name in northern Kazakhstan, located in the Burabay District of Akmola Region, in the eastern foothills of Kokshe Mountain. The shores of the lake are overgrown with pine forest. The name of the lake originates from the word bor, which means "pine forest". The historical name is Auliekol, which means "holy lake". The water in the lake is limpid and the bottom can be seen clearly. The water surface of the lake is almost open, only the western and northwestern shores are rushy; the southern shores are rocky, and the eastern shores are sandy. The bottom is flat. The lake has several capes. Near the northwestern cape, there is a rocky mushroom-shaped island, Zhumbaktas ("Sphinx"), reaching an elevation of 20 meters (66 ft) above the water. Burabay is separated by mountain ranges from the closest lakes. The cliffs and capes of the northwestern and southern coasts create a unique landscape.
Burabay National Park
The Burabay National Park is a natural park located in the Burabay District, in Aqmola Region, Kazakhstan. The park is under the direct jurisdiction of the President of Kazakhstan. In the protected area of the national park, economic and leisure activities are prohibited, as the park is under the regulation of nature reserves. The first step towards the protection of this natural space has been the establishment of the State Forest in 1898. In 1920, Burabay has been nationalized and declared spa town of national importance. In 1935, the « National Nature Reserve of Burabay» has been organized. In 1951, the nature reserve was dissolved, and in place of it, the Burabay Forest has been established. The governmental motion N° 787 of May 6 of 1997 transformed the Forest of Burabay into the « Natural and Well-being Complex of the Forest of Burabay », managed by the State. In 2000, the motion N°1246 of August 12 created the « National nature park of Burabay », which includes a superficies of 83 511 ha, of which 47 600 ha of forests. In 2010, the superficies of the park has been expanded to 129 935 ha. In 2012, 370 ha have been converted into spare lands.
Kokshe Mountain
The Blue Mountain (Kokshe Tau) is the highest peak in the Kokshe Mountains, reaching 947 metres. Many songs, poems and legends about the beauty of the area have been passed from one generation to another. Locals have given the place a variety of names: the Area of Blue Lakes, Kazakh Pearl and the Area of Blue Mountains.
Mountain Bolektau
Mountain Bolektau is a short, easy ascent mountain that takes around half an hour and still gives you nice views of both Lake Burabay and Bolshoe Chebachie Lake to its north.
Nur-Sultan
Nur-Sultan, known between 1998 and 2019 as Astana, is the capital city of Kazakhstan. In March 2019, it was renamed Nur-Sultan in honour of the departing Kazakh president, Nursultan Nazarbayev. It was founded in 1824 as a Russian military outpost and became an administrative centre in 1868. Its population had reached 33,000 when it was made an oblast (province) centre in 1939. The city’s importance was greatly enhanced during the Soviet period by the government’s Virgin and Idle Lands Campaign of the mid-1950s—Tselinograd was Russian for “City of the Virgin Lands”—and by the city’s role as the capital of a Kray (region) that united the five northern provinces of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic in 1960–65.
