Highlights

Kadriorg Palace and Park
If there’s one part of Tallinn outside Old Town that a first time visitor absolutely, definitely, unquestionably has to see, it’s Kadriorg. Though it’s only a few minutes’ walk from the centre, this quiet area is a world unto itself, a secluded neighbourhood made up of large areas of forested park criss-crossed by paths and dotted with statues and ponds. It’s also home to a number of intriguing 19th- and 20th-century villas, and the nation’s top art museums.
Parlament Building and Tall Hermann Tower
The Estonian Parliament building is located next to the walls of Toompea Castle. This is an active government building, open for tourists to observe the work of Parliament from a special balcony. The Tall Hermann Tower (Pikk Herman) is part of the Parliament building. This is the highest tower of the Tallinn city walls.
Tallinn
Located on the coast of Gulf of Finland, Tallinn is a well known city and capital of Estonia. Tallinn is an intoxicating mix of ancient church spires, glass skyscrapers, baroque palaces, appealing eateries, brooding battlements, shiny shopping malls, run-down wooden houses, and cafes set on sunny squares – with a few Soviet throwbacks in the mix, for added spice. Many relics of Tallinn’s long history survive or have been restored, especially on Toompea hill and in the old, walled Lower Town. Port of Tallinn is the biggest port authority in Estonia. If you are a lover of history and enjoy shopping on the streets, this is one city that you just can't avoid to miss.
Tallinn Old Lower Town
Lower Town, the larger part of medieval Tallinn (or Reval as it was called back then), became a member of the Hanseatic League at the end of the 13th century. Goods from around the world came in through the port and were traded on the market on Town Hall Square. Reval operated autonomously from the rest of the Estonian territories right up until Tsarist Russian times. As in the rest of the country, the real movers and shakers in Reval society were the Baltic Germans, with Ethnic Estonians for most part second-class citizens. However, Estonian peasants from surrounding areas often escaped to the city, where they could eventually be considered free.
Toompea Hill and Castle
Built on the spot where the ancient Estonians' wooden fortress stood before the 1219 Danish invasion, Tallinn's castle served for seven centuries as the seat of power for the nation's foreign masters. Now it houses the Riigikogu, Estonia’s parliament. On one corner of the castle you can see Pikk Hermann tower with the blue, black and white tricolour flag waving above it. It’s commonly recognised that whoever’s flag flies on top of this tower is the ruler of Estonia. The pink section you see in front is actually a baroque structure added in the 18th Century.

Itinerary

10:00

Your walking tour of the Upper Town will begin when you exit the vehicle ready to ascend Toompea, the limestone hill at the heart of the city of Tallinn. Once you have reached the top be rewarded with the impressive skyline of one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Make sure you have your camera ready to snapshots of the pink Parliament House of Estonia, Tall Hermann Tower, and the Russian Orthodox Church which has stood since 1900. Move on with your sightseeing to the Lutheran Dome Church otherwise known as St Mary’s Cathedral, dating back to the 13th century. This impressive building was a burial ground of the rich and titled. The whitewashed walls are decorated with the elaborate coats-of-arms of Estonia’s most noble families. The capital of Estonia is the perfect place for the House of the Estonian Knighthood. Be ready to take lots of pictures here at the viewing platform!

Move on to Eastern Tallinn via Kadriorg Park. The most outstanding palatial and urban park in Estonia. The best place in town for strolling and pondering amongst the ample acreage, patches of green, flowing fountains, and pretty little flower beds. You will soon see why Peter the Great founded this beautiful park in honor of his wife Catherine. Continue on to visit Song Festival Grounds. This large event venue holds a very special place in Estonian’s hearts as the birthplace of the Singing Revolution. Immerse yourself in the view of the sea and the Old Town of Tallinn, a fabulous place for a photo opportunity. Don’t forget to purchase a souvenir while you’re here!

Leaving Tallinn’s Song Festival Grounds you will have a comfortable journey to Lasnamäe.

Construction began in the 1970s during the Soviet period. Lasnamäe can be divided into two distinct areas: the southern part is mainly industrial and the northern part is residential with vast, high panel never-ending apartments.

From Lasnamäe continue on to the Kose, Pirita district where you will see for yourself the very different type of architecture, full of private houses from the ’50s and ’60s with their neat little gardens. Just across the river lies the remarkable ruins of St Birgitta Convent, dating back to the 15th century. Founded in 1407 it was the largest convent for both monks and nuns in Old Livonia. Unfortunately, this was destroyed by Ivan the Terrible’s forces in 1577. Take time to explore inside these vast ruins.

Be taken to a completely different world when you arrive at the coast of the Viimsi Peninsula. It first saw inhabitants over 1000 years ago who were successful merchants and daring seafarers. Buildings have since developed along the skyline but the sea still defines the character of Viimsi. Once the center of a prominent fish farm, you can still see the old farm buildings alongside the new-build houses.

A visit to the Viimsi Open-Air Museum is included so you can go and see the authentic and historical coastal village for yourself.  Before returning to your vehicle for your journey back to the ship enjoy the picturesque seashore.
