Highlights

Kiel
Kiel is the city and the capital of Schleswig-Holstein Land (state), northern Germany. Kiel is a port on both sides of the Kiel Fjord, an inlet of the western Baltic Sea, and lies at the eastern end of the Kiel Canal.
Kiel Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Garden of Kiel opened its gates to the public in 1985 but is also an academic facility of the Christian-Albrechts-University. In the outside area of 8 ha as well as in seven big greenhouses, it offers a representative cross section of the flora of each continent. The Botanical Garden is ideal for plant lovers or a short vacation from everyday life.
Kiel Canal
The Kiel Canal is a 98-kilometre-long (61 mi) freshwater canal in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. The canal was finished in 1895, but later widened, and links the North Sea at Brunsbüttel to the Baltic Sea at Kiel-Holtenau. An average of 250 nautical miles (460 km) is saved by using the Kiel Canal instead of going around the Jutland Peninsula. This not only saves time but also avoids storm-prone seas and having to pass through the Sound or Belts.
Schifffahrtsmuseum (Kiel Maritime Museum)
Kiel Maritime Museum was established in 1978 in what had been the fish-auction hall in the Sartorikai area of the city. It shows the maritime history of Kiel.
