Highlights

Barfüsserplatz
The Barfüsserplatz is located in the center of the Swiss city of Basel. With eight tramlines crossing it, the square is one of the most important tram hubs in the city. The Barfüsserplatz is in front of the Barfüsserkirche. The Gerbergasse as the actual valley road of the old town, the Falknerstrasse, which emerged from the Birsig overburden in 1900, the Streitgasse as a connection to the Freie Strasse, the Steinenberg and the Kohlenberg, the streets in the position of the trenches of the first wall ring and the Steinenvorstadt, flow into the square. the Basel amusement street. The unofficial name used in French-speaking countries is Place des Cordeliers.
Basel
Basel is a city on the Rhine River in northwest Switzerland, close to the country’s borders with France and Germany. Its medieval old town centers around Marktplatz, dominated by the 16th-century, red-sandstone Town Hall. Its 12th-century Gothic cathedral has city views, and contains the tomb of the 16th-century Dutch scholar, Erasmus. The city’s university houses some of Erasmus’ works.
Basel Minster
Basel Minster is a religious building in the Swiss city of Basel, originally a Catholic cathedral and today a Reformed Protestant church. The original cathedral was built between 1019 and 1500 in Romanesque and Gothic styles.
Basel Town Hall
The Basel Town Hall is a 500-year-old building dominating the Marktplatz in Basel, Switzerland. The Town Hall houses the meetings of the Cantonal Parliament as well as the Cantonal Government of the canton of Basel-Stadt.
Blue and White Houses
The Blue and The White House (Blaues und Weisses Haus) are two town mansions in the city of Basel. The semi-detached baroque mansions on the Rheinsprung 16 and 18 in Basel, also known as “The Reichensteinerhof” and “The Wendelstörferhof”, were built by the architect Samuel Werenfels for the brothers Lukas and Jakob Sarasin between 1763 and 1775. “The White House” belonged to Lukas (1730 – 1802) and “The Blue House” to his younger brother Jakob (1742 – 1802). The two patricians had a manufactory for silk products. Descendants of them were the founders of the Bank Sarasin & Cie. in Basel. The still mainly original interiors of the mansions were executed by highly skilled craftsmen. The stucco ceilings were made by Johann Martin Frohweis and the faience stoves were delivered by the Frisching Faience Manufactory. The numerous sopraporte were painted by German artists. The two mansions were bought by the canton and the city of Basel in 1942 and in 1968. Nowadays, they are the seat of the Department for Economy, Social Welfare and Environment.
Elisabethenkirche
The Elisabethenkirche, or Offene Kirche Elisabethen, is a 19th-century church building in the centre of Basel, next to the Theater Basel, in Switzerland. It is a well detailed example of Swiss Gothic Revival style churches. It has a 72 metres tall bell tower and spire. The tower has internal stairs.
Helvetia Sculpture
Helvetia is the female national personification of Switzerland, officially Confœderatio Helvetica, the "Helvetic Confederation". This statue has exactly the look of the Helvetia on the coins - except for the suitcase. The tired Helvetia looking at the Rhine by artist Bettina Eichin was erected in 1980 at the Northern end of the central bridge. It has become the most popular representation of Helvetia since then.
Kleinbasel
Kleinbasel is called the part of the Swiss city of Basel on the right bank of the Rhine. The Kleinbasel comprises the Kleinbasel old town, the quarters Clara, Rosental, Matthäus, Klybeck, Wettstein, Hirzbrunnen as well as (the formerly independent) Kleinhüningen.
MarktPlatz
The market square is dominated by the impressive City Hall, the seat of government of the Canton of Basel-Stadt. During the week, the market on the square sells fresh vegetables, fruit and flowers.
Mittlere Bridge
The Middle Bridge is a historic bridge in the Swiss city of Basel. It is situated on the oldest existing bridge site across the Rhine, between Lake Constance and the North Sea.
Pauluskirche Basel
St. Paul's Church is a Reformed Church in Basel, Switzerland, part of the Evangelical-Reformed Church of the Canton Basel-Stadt. The church was constructed between May 1898 and November 1901 by Karl Moser and Robert Curjel, and features a Neo-Romanesque architectural style.
Rhine River
The Rhine is one of the major European rivers, which has its sources in Switzerland and flows in a mostly northerly direction through Germany and the Netherlands, emptying into the North Sea.
Tinguely Fountain
Basel got a new landmark in 1977 when Jean Tinguely placed some amusing machine sculptures in an enormous pool of water on the site where the stage of the old city theatre was once located. The Swiss artist had black asphalt poured into a shallow basin before placing these low power-operated, water-spouting objects in it. These nine iron eminences are in constant motion and “talk” to each other just as did the mimers, actors and dancers who once performed at this very spot.
