Highlights

Cadiz
Cádiz is an ancient port city in the Andalucia region of southwestern Spain. The home of the Spanish Navy, the port boomed in the 16th-century as a base for exploration and trade. It has more than 100 watchtowers, including the iconic Torre Tavira, which was traditionally used for spotting ships. On the waterfront is the domed, 18th-century Cádiz Cathedral, featuring baroque and neoclassical elements.
Cadiz Cathedral
Cádiz Cathedral is a Roman Catholic church in Cádiz, southern Spain, and the seat of the Diocese of Cadiz y Ceuta. It was built between 1722 and 1838. The cathedral was declared Bien de Interés Cultural in 1931. The Plaza de la Catedral houses both the Cathedral and the Baroque Santiago church, built in 1635.
El Populo
Old-town core El Pópulo is dominated by the towering, baroque Cádiz Cathedral and its older, smaller neighbor, Santa Cruz church. The ancient Roman Theatre is now an open-air museum of excavated ruins, while the striking Arco de los Blanco is one of several atmospheric medieval passageways. Narrow streets lined with leather shops and tapas bars open onto grand plazas where crowds eat on lively restaurant terraces.
La Viña
Laid-back La Viña is a traditional fisherman’s quarter, where buzzing Andalusian taverns and tapas bars serve regional fino sherries and grilled razor clams. Every year, vibrant carnival celebrations take place in quaint squares like Plaza Tío de la Tiza and along narrow streets lined with colorful townhouses. A small garden overlooking La Caleta beach is shaded by the Arbol del Mora, a long-standing mulberry tree.
Plaza de España
Every Spanish city worth its salt has a Plaza de España, so of course, the constitution city is going to join in. The Plaza de España in Cádiz is a vast meeting point that is surprisingly peaceful, with the massive Monument to the Cortes of Cádiz found in its centre.
Plaza de las Flores
Lively square with a flower market, bars, eateries & the city's 1930 main post office.
Roman Theatre (Cartagena)
The theatre was built between 5 and 1 BC, as has been proven by the dedication of the edifice to Gaius and Lucius Caesar, grandsons of Augustus, who had designated them as his successors. In the 3rd century AD a market was built over the theatre, reusing its materials, with a semicircular open space which followed the plan of the orchestra. The market was perhaps abandoned after a fire caused by the Vandals in 425. A market quarter of the Byzantines was established on the site in the 6th century AD. Dedicatory inscriptions to Gaius and Lucius Caesar. During the 13th century, the Old Cathedral of the city was built over the upper cavea. In 1988 the first remains of the theatre were discovered during the construction of the Centro regional de artesanía. The archaeological excavations and the restorations were completed in 2003. In 2008 a museum, designed by Rafael Moneo, was opened.
