Highlights

Gdansk
Like a ministate all to itself, Gdańsk has a unique feel that sets it apart from other cities in Poland. Centuries of maritime ebb and flow as a major Baltic port; streets of distinctively un-Polish architecture influenced by a united nations of wealthy merchants who shaped the city’s past; the toing and froing of Danzig/Gdańsk between Teutonic Prussia and Slavic Poland; and the destruction wrought by WWII have all bequeathed a special atmosphere that makes Gdańsk an increasingly popular destination.
Gdansk Old Town
When visiting Gdansk, you may feel that you are carried back to the Middle Ages, and even though substantial parts of the town consist of reconstructions from after WWII, you will still find plenty of authentic, genuine old buildings. Most streets are located where they were in medieval times, and more than 30% of the streets have had the same names for more than 500 years. The old town is one of Europe’s largest historical centres, and the medieval centre is around twice the size of the corresponding centre in Krakow.
Green Gate
This magnificent four-arched gatehouse on the waterfront was built as a palace for Polish monarchs. No Polish king ever stayed in the building, but Lech Wałęsa had his office here before moving to the European Solidarity Centre. The gate leads to the Green Bridge, which spans the Motława River and which used to be raised to stop the riff-raff from getting into the Old Town. Following careful renovation, the gate now bears an uncanny resemblance to Amsterdam's central train station, and hosts the Modern Art Gallery and the Gdańsk Photo Gallery.

Itinerary

10:00

You’ll travel by bus from the port to the Green Gate, your gateway into the Old Town. Whilst on the journey, your guide will provide you with everything you need to know to make the most of your day.  There’s plenty to see and do in Gdansk Old Town so it makes good sense to find out all that is on offer so you can focus your time on seeing the things you find most interesting. Your guide will also give you some tips on great places to eat as well as where to seek out the best shopping bargains.

Most visitors to Gdansk Old Town make time to walk along the very picturesque St Mary’s Street, wending their way towards the famous St Mary’s Basilica, the largest brick-built shrine in the world. There you’ll discover gothic altars, one of the world’s largest medieval clocks, and The Last Judgement, a painting by Hans Memling.

Long Market gives you plenty of choices for souvenir and gift shopping as well as cafes and bars for refreshments along the way. Here you’ll also see the iconic Neptune Fountain and nearby you may decide to visit Artus Court and The Golden House – or even the impressive Town Hall.

Gdansk is bursting with wonderful places to enjoy – why not make it your own and opt for the Easy Gdansk Tour?
