Highlights

Argostoli
Argostoli is a town and a former municipality on the island of Kefalonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform, it is part of the municipality Kefalonia, of which it is a municipal unit. It has been the capital and administrative center of Kefalonia since 1757, following a population shift down from the old capital of Agios Georgios (also known as Kastro) to take advantage of the trading opportunities provided by the sheltered bay upon which Argostoli sits. Argostoli developed into one of the busiest ports in Greece, leading to prosperity and growth. The municipal unit has an area of 157.670 km2. The 2011 census recorded a population of 10,633 in the Argostoli municipal unit.

Traveling along the beautiful seaside road of Fanari, where you will stop at Katavothres for a photo opportunity of the sinkholes. This is a geological phenomenon observed in 1835, with seawater entering the cracks close to shore it follows a long path underground flowing into the lake of Melissani & Karamomylos area.

We will continue the scenic drive to the Robiola Winery, passing through the Villages of Livathi and the imposing castle of St George, situated in the Omala Valley, which is famous for the production of Robiola, a Kefalonian local wine. Situated next to the winery under the slopes of the Ainos Mountian is the Monastery of St Gerasimos, who was the patron saint of Kefalonia, the Monastery is a sacred place for Kefalonia citizens. The relic of the Saint are kept in a glass case placed above the Saint’s Tomb.

Continuing the tour passing through the town of Sami with its vast harbor and lovely buildings we will arrive at Karavomilos, a small and pretty fishing village, with a narrow beach and great views across to Ithaca. Situated on a small circular lake you will find the local water mill which the town was named after. This area attracts lots of wildlife including ducks, swans, and herons, due to being surrounded by lush vegetation.

A short drive from Karavomilos is the pretty fishing village of Agia Efimia, surrounded by sea and fir tree coved mountains, this small but beautiful village has lots to offer from traditional Greek waterside cafes, tavernas and a great selection of shops. A traditional character of this town is the house’s red-tiled roof’s which spread around the natural bay.
