Highlights

American River town
American River is a town in the Australian state of South Australia located on the western shore of Eastern Cove on Kangaroo Island. The area now known as American River was first visited by Europeans in 1802 when Matthew Flinders landed to survey this part of Kangaroo Island. In 1803, a group of American sealers camped for four months in the area. They arrived on the brig Union and built their own 35-ton schooner Independence from local timber. The town takes its name from this time. A memorial plaque and accompanying anchor (recovered in 1969) from an early American whaling vessel are dedicated to Union's crew. Frank Potts was the first official settler in 1842, before moving to the mainland and establishing the Bleasdale vineyard and winery at Langhorne Creek. John Buick, a professional boat builder, built the first house in the town in 1844. It was fashioned out of local stone, pug, and sput timber and remained standing until 1985.
Cygnet River
Cygnet River is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on Kangaroo Island about 192 kilometres (119 miles) south-west of the state capital of Adelaide and about 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) from the municipal seat of Kingscote. Its boundaries were created in 2002 in respect to “the long-established name” which is reported to be derived from the stream located within its boundaries. Cygnet River is located within the federal division of Mayo, the state electoral district of Mawson and the local government area of the Kangaroo Island Council.
Kangaroo Island
Kangaroo Island lies off the mainland of South Australia, southwest of Adelaide. Over a third of the island is protected in nature reserves, home to native wildlife like sea lions, koalas, and diverse bird species. In the west, Flinders Chase National Park is known for penguin colonies and striking coastal rock formations, like the sculpted Remarkable Rocks and the stalactite-covered Admirals Arch.
Seal Bay
Seal Bay is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the south coast of Kangaroo Island overlooking the body of water known in Australia as the Southern Ocean and by international authorities as to the Great Australian Bight. It is located about 164 kilometres (102 miles) southwest of the state capital of Adelaide and about 50 kilometres (31 miles) south of the municipal seat of Kingscote. Its boundaries were created in 2002 with respect to “the long-established name.”
Stokes Bay
Stokes Bay is a bay in South Australia on the northern coast of Kangaroo Island located about 38 kilometres (24 mi) west of the town of Kingscote. It is described as being the largest of a number of coves located along the coast between Cape Dutton about 3 nautical miles (5.6 km) to the west and Cape Cassini about 7 nautical miles (13 km) to the east. The source of the bay's name is reported as taking its names from "supposedly takes its name from the first mate of the Hartley which arrived in South Australia in October 1837" and is not to be confused with a Henry Stokes (c.1808-1898), a sealer who lived on Kangaroo Island prior to 1836 or a John Stokes who arrived on the island in 1817 and who is reported as residing at Stokes Bay.
