Overview

Battambang is Cambodia's second-largest city located in the northwestern part of the country. The name of the city and province, literally translated from Khmer, means "thrown club". There is an opinion that it is in Battambang where you can see the real rural life of ordinary Cambodians, not embellished for tourists. Battambang is also home to Cambodia’s best-preserved examples of colonial buildings and other ancient architecture, which is well worth observing.

Highlights

Battambang
Battambang is a city on the Sangkae River in northwestern Cambodia. It’s known for colonial buildings such as Sala Khaet, the former Governor’s Residence. Battambang Provincial Museum has artifacts from local Khmer temples. Nearby, Phare Ponleu Selpak is a circus and performing arts school for underprivileged children. North of the center are the ruins of Ek Phnom, an 11th-century pagoda with sandstone carvings.
Battambang Central Market
Pasar Nat is a market in Battambang, Cambodia. Pasar Nat is located in the centre of a large square surrounded by shop houses, many of which date back to the era when Cambodia was a French colony. Pasar Nat is clearly the central point in Battamabang and many of the town’s most popular hotels, bars and restaurants are located in this area.
Battambang Governor’s Residence
The Governor’s Residence, or Sala Khaet in Cambodian, is a grand European style building located near the Provincial Hall in Battambang. The Governor’s Residence is no longer used a government building and is open to visitors from 08:00 to 18:00 every day. Entrance is free and there is a very helpful English speaking attendant on hand to show visitors around the exhibits.
Battambang Provincial Museum
Battambang Provincial Museum is a museum in Kamkor village, Svay Por commune, Battambang Province, western Cambodia. It was established in 1963 by Madeleine Giteau. It houses a notable pre and Angkorian collection of pottery, statuary, and musical instruments.
Damrey Sor Pagoda
Damrey Sor means ‘White Elephant’ and the best known feature of this temple is the two white elephant statues which stand at either side of the entrance to the main temple building. Damrey Sor Pagoda was established in 1904, with the main temple building completed in 1908 ,under the patronage of the one of the wives of the local King.
Lok Ta Dambong Kra Nhoung
The name literally means loss of stick referring to a legend of Preah Bat Dambang Kranhoung (Kranhoung Stick King). Most people called Lok Ta Dambong Kra Nhoung.
Sangke Pagoda
Sangke Pagoda is Angkor style tower located in the grounds of Wat Sanker in Battambang, Cambodia. Very little is known for sure about Sangke Pagoda, not even when it was built. The Pagoda maybe over a 1,000 years old as it could have been constructed at the same time as the more famous Wat Ek Phnom temple complex some 13 km from the Sangke Pagoda. Wat Ek Phnom was constructed in 1027 during the reign of Suryavarman I. This is proof that the temple builders of the Angkor regime were active in region a very long time ago.
Wat Kandal
Wat Kandal, also known as Wat Gahndahl, is a Buddhist Temple in Battambang, Cambodia. Admission to Wat Kandal is free and the temple has no specific opening hours although it makes sense to visit during daylight hours. Wat Kandal is near to Sanker Pagoda and Battambang Governor’s Residence and its easy to visit all three in a single morning or afternoon.
