Overview

Kaohsiung is the biggest city in southern Taiwan that transformed from a polluted industrial center of two million people to today's green city of lush parks, waterside cafes, art galleries, and museums. Kaohsiung is the lesser-known travel destination in Taiwan that most people overlook in favour of the capital. But under the cover of this sleepy seaside city lies a treasure trove of undiscovered gems.

Kaohsiung
Kaohsiung is a massive port city in southern Taiwan. It's home to many skyscrapers, such as the 248m-tall Tuntex Sky Tower, and is known for its diversity of parks. Its focal point is the Love River, with walking paths and cafes along its banks, and cruise boats navigating its waters. Shopping options range from high-end malls to the Liuhe and Ruifeng night markets.
Kaohsiung Confucius Temple
The Kaohsiung Confucius Temple is a temple dedicated to the memory of Confucius near Lotus Pond, Zuoying District, in the Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung. With an area of 167 square metres (1,800 square feet), it is Taiwan's largest Confucian temple complex. The temple was originally constructed in 1684, during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor. However, during the Japanese colonial period, the temple fell into disuse and disrepair. Only the Chongsheng shrine remains intact; it can be seen on the west side of the Old City Elementary School. A new temple was constructed in 1976, now on the northwest corner of Lotus Pond. The new design was based on Song dynasty architecture, as well as the design of the Temple of Confucius, Qufu.
Kaohsiung Martyrs' Shrine
The Kaohsiung Martyrs' Shrine is a martyrs' shrine in Gushan District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The site was originally established as Takao Kotohira Shrine during the Japanese rule of Taiwan in 1910 dedicated to Omononushi-no-Mikoto and Emperor Sutoku. In 1920, the government of Takao Prefecture applied to the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office central government in Taihoku Prefecture for additional worshipping of Prince Yoshihisa and renamed the shrine as Takao Shrine. In 1926, upon acquisition of land on the hillside of Shoushan, fundraising was underway for the Shrine relocation, which was completed in 1929 and received the Kensha rank in 1932, officially listed in the Japanese state Shinto system.
Lotus Pond
Lotus Pond is an artificial lake and popular tourist destination on the east side of Zuoying District in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Opened in 1951, it is famous for the lotus plants on the lake and the numerous temples around the lake, including the Spring and Autumn Pavilions, the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas, and the Confucian Temple. Lotus Pond was the site for several water sporting events for World Games 2009, including canoe polo, water ski, and dragon boat.
Old City of Zuoying
The Old City of Zuoying, also known as the Old City of Fongshan County, is a walled city located in Zuoying District, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It was built during the Qing rule period and is one of the first Taiwanese cities fortified by a defensive wall. The city was administrated under the Fongshan County of Taiwan Prefecture. Situated in contemporary Zuoying, the Old Fongshan City was the first wall built in the County by the Qing Government after taking control of Taiwan, and was also Taiwan's first city wall. The wall was built with coral stone from Chaishan and was filled with cement, while the arch was built with granite from China. It has been designated a grade 1 national heritage site.
