Highlights

Altstadt Zürich Old town
The charming, car-free Altstadt, or old town, is the city’s historic heart. Its quaint squares and medieval alleyways are home to cozy bars, traditional Swiss restaurants and small clothing shops. Cultural spots include the Opernhaus and Schauspielhaus for performing arts, while European artworks are on display at the Kunsthaus museum.
Bahnhofstrasse
Bahnhofstrasse is Zürich's main downtown street and one of the world's most expensive and exclusive shopping avenues. In 2011, a study named the Bahnhofstrasse the most expensive street for retail property in Europe, and the third most expensive worldwide. In 2016 ranked ninth.
Fraumünster Church
The Fraumünster is a church in Zürich that was built on the remains of a former abbey for aristocratic women which was founded in 853 by Louis the German for his daughter Hildegard. The choir of the abbey includes 5 large stained glass windows designed by artist Marc Chagall and installed in 1970. Each of the 5 has a dominant color and depicts a Biblical story.
Grossmünster
The Grossmünster, also spelled Großmünster, is a Romanesque-style Protestant church in Zürich, Switzerland. It is one of the four major churches in the city. Its congregation forms part of the Evangelical Reformed Church of the Canton of Zürich.
Limmat River
The Limmat is a river in Switzerland. The river commences at the outfall of Lake Zurich, in the southern part of the city of Zurich. From Zurich, it flows in a northwesterly direction, after 35 km reaching the river Aare. The confluence is located north of the small town of Brugg and shortly after the mouth of the Reuss. The main towns along the Limmat Valley downstream of Zurich are Dietikon, Wettingen, and Baden. Its main tributaries are the Linth, via Lake Zurich, the Sihl, in Zurich, and the Reppisch, in Dietikon.
Lindenhof
The Lindenhof is a moraine hill and a public square in the historic center of Zürich, Switzerland. It is the site of the Roman and Carolingian era Kaiserpfalz around which the city has historically grown. The hilltop area—including its prehistoric, Roman, and medieval remains—is listed as a Swiss heritage site of national significance.
Niederdorf
Lively Niederdorf, part of the old town, is known for its medieval streets and squares, cathedrals like the Romanesque Grossmünster, and Limmatquai promenade, with views of Lake Zurich. Musée Visionnaire shows Art Brut paintings, while Cabaret Voltaire is an offbeat arts center for events and installations. Upscale boutiques and fine-dining restaurants dot the area, alongside cocktail bars and a few nightclubs.
Schipfe
"Schipfe" is one of the oldest quarters of the city of Zurich and runs below Lindenhof. Schipfe – Traditional Trades Still Cultivated Today in Zurich's Oldest District. Boats docked at "Schipfe" in the Middle Ages, which delivered silk, gold and food to Zurich. Today, the district is an idyllic place to linger.
St. Peter's Church Zürich
St. Peter is one of the four main churches of the old town of Zürich, Switzerland, besides Grossmünster, Fraumünster, and Predigerkirche.
Zurich
The city of Zurich, a global center for banking and finance, lies at the north end of Lake Zurich in northern Switzerland. The picturesque lanes of the central Altstadt (Old Town), on either side of the Limmat River, reflect its pre-medieval history. Waterfront promenades like the Limmatquai follow the river toward the 17th-century Rathaus (town hall).
