Highlights

Furnas
Furnas is a civil parish in the municipality of Povoação on the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese Azores. The population in 2011 was 1,439, in an area of 34.43 km². The parish is one of the largest on the island and in the Azores. It is located east of Lagoa and Ponta Delgada, west of Povoação and southeast of Ribeira Grande.
Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel Island, is the capital of the Azores archipelago of Portugal. The striking, 3-arched city gates and the Gothic-style Church of St. Sebastian are near the harbor. The Convent and Chapel of Our Lady of Hope houses a revered image of Christ. The Carlos Machado Museum offers diverse artifacts of Azorean culture. The city is a gateway to the crater lakes of Sete Cidades, to the northwest. Ponta Delgada began as a simple fishing village whose fishermen were once attracted by its safe coves but soon began to play the role of the main port of São Miguel Island. The city grew and in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the churches and manor houses flourished and still today they integrate the historic center.
Vila Franca do Campo
Vila Franca do Campo is a town and municipality in the southern part of the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese Autonomous Region of the Azores. The population of the municipality was 11,229 in 2011, in an area of 77.97 km². The town proper, which incorporates the urbanized parishes São Miguel and São Pedro, has 4100 inhabitants.

Meet your guide at your hotel in Ponta Delgada.

The tour begins with a visit to the northern coast of São Miguel island – a tea plantation and a factory with a tasting of local tea – the oldest, and currently only, tea plantation in Europe.

After that, we will arrive in Furnas Valley, stop on a high mountain with panoramic views of the active volcano crater. Walk along the geyser valley, where the earth is warm enough to cook the famous Cozido das Furnas. Time for lunch in a local restaurant with the opportunity to try the famous dish.

After lunch, we’ll walk through the botanical park where you can feed fish, pet ducks, and admire black swans. You will have time to swim in a natural pool with warm water (+38 ° C). Explore geysers and mineral springs. Then we’ll move to the south coast, where you will see the first capital of the island Vila Franca and an uninhabited islet.

The tour ends with a trip back to Ponta Delgada.
