Highlights

Caldeira Velha
The Caldeira Velha Natural and Regional Monument is located in Ribeira Grande, São Miguel island, an archipelago of the Azores and presents itself as a biosphere reserve of great importance for the botany and typical fauna of the Laurisilva Forests, given the great diversity of species and the high abundance of tree ferns that inhabit this natural monument, mainly due to very own climate that stimulated the appearance of natural vegetation associations and forest of exotic species.
Fogo lake
Lagoa do Fogo is a crater lake within the Água de Pau Massif stratovolcano in the center of the island of São Miguel in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. The highest lake located on the island of São Miguel, the region is protected by governmental regulation that does not permit any constructions around the lake.
Ribeira
The narrow, cobbled streets of Ribeira are dotted with small bars and eateries serving classic Portuguese fare like grilled sardines. Beside the Douro River, Praça da Ribeira square is lined with colorful 18th-century townhouses, while the neoclassical landmark, Palácio da Bolsa, is known for its ornate interiors. Hard Club hosts rock gigs and club nights in a restored market building.

Itinerary

10:00

Head over to the Pico da Barrosa Viewpoint. At an altitude of 949 meters and part of the Ribeira Grande city, it is from here where you will be able to see the impressive Lago do Fogo lake at its fullest. Lagoa do Fogo is a vast crater lake that is surrounded by forested production and endemic Macaronesian species.

This fantastic viewpoint is perfect for bird lovers as Kites and Seagulls can often be seen, giving you a unique feeling of being surrounded by nature. The Caldeira Velha Interpretation center will be our next stop. A popular, scenic nature reserve featuring lush vegetation, a waterfall, and hot springs, plus showers. It works hard to promote the natural heritage of the area and is also home to 3 thermal pools and offers an interpretative exhibition that leads its visitors into a voyage through the volcanic origin of the islands, the Fogo volcano formation, the biodiversity, geodiversity, geothermal and thermal resources.

From here you will be confronted with the geothermal field developed on the northern flank of “Vulcao do Fogo”. The geothermal power plants exploit a deep geothermal reservoir of high enthalpy, converting their heat into electricity.

It is from here we will make our last stop at the only city on the north of the island, Ribeira Grande.

This city and a municipality have a unique diversity of landscapes where you can discover and enjoy the beauty of the Lagoa do Fogo, chosen as one of the seven Portuguese Wonders in the wild beach category. It is a Natural Reserve with a high environmental, landscape, and tourist value and one of the ex-libris of the Azores.

Not only does it have rich cultural and religious attractions, but it is also the location for many important economic activities as the production of cheese, green tea, liquors, and chocolates. With your day now at an end, we will head back to the south of the island and back to the cruise port in plenty of time for your ship’s departure.
