Highlights

Bass Strait
Bass Strait, channel separating Victoria, Australia, from the island of Tasmania on the south. Its maximum width is 150 miles (240 km), and its depth is 180–240 feet (50–70 m). King Island and the Indian Ocean lie at its western extremity, and the Furneaux Group is at its eastern end. Banks Strait is the southeastern opening to the Tasman Sea. Another small group, the Hunter Islands, is located off the northwestern tip of Tasmania. The strait was named in 1798 by the English navigator Matthew Flinders for the surgeon-explorer George Bass.
Cape Woolamai
Cape Woolamai is a very small town and headland at the south eastern tip of Phillip Island in Victoria, Australia. It is home to Cape Woolamai State Faunal Reserve and the Phillip Island Airport. The cape was named by George Bass (but spelt "Wollamai") when he passed it on his whaleboat voyage in early 1798. Wollamai is the snapper fish (Pagrus auratus) in the language of the Eora aboriginal people of Port Jackson, where the fish is found. Bass, who had learnt some of the Sydney language from the Eora leader Bennelong, thought the headland resembled the head of that fish. In 1826, during the establishment of Fort Dumaresq, near Rhyll, coal was reported to have been found in the vicinity of the Cape. Today Cape Woolamai has a world-renowned surf beach, Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club, and a popular Safety Beach.
Koala Conservation Centre
The Koala Conservation Centre is an ecotourism attraction that has played a key role in saving the population of koalas on Phillip Island. Tree-top boardwalks allow watching koalas up close in their natural habitat. The abundant birdlife, wallabies, echidnas and bats can also surprise the visitors. Australia’s most iconic critters up can be seen close and personal in their natural habitat. There are over 6 hectares of bushwalking trails to explore, all easily accessible. From the boardwalk, the beautiful wetland landscape that surrounds the centre and spot other native species can be seen.
Phillip Island
Phillip Island is a large island at the mouth of Western Port Bay, located less than two hours drive from Melbourne in Victoria. Because of its proximity to the state capital, it's a popular weekend tourist destination, especially during the summer months. The island is separated from the mainland by just a channel and is connected by a bridge. It is part of the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland. Cowes is the main town on the island, and in addition there are other smaller towns such as Rhyll, Cape Woolamai, Ventnor (closest town to the Penguin Parade) and Newhaven. The principal source of income is tourism, and there are many cafes, restaurants etc. to cater to the appetites of the tourists.
Summerland Beach
The Summerland Beach stretches just over a kilometre and has a steady swell most days making it perfect for boogie boarding and splashing in the shallows. Smaller summer swells make it the perfect beach for new surfers to hone their craft, while the large winter swells have made this beach the perfect for experienced surfers. Many of the beaches surrounding Summerland Beach become inaccessible during the winter months making it the perfect year-round location for avid surfers. Over 4,000 of the 32,000 little penguins living in the waters around Phillip Island have their burrows around Summerland Beach. Native to Australia and the smallest of their species at just 33 centimetres, the little penguins leave their burrows about an hour before sunrise and swim up to 100 kilometres each day before returning at dusk.
