Highlights

Ben Thanh Market
Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City's District 1 is a great place to buy local handicrafts, branded goods, Vietnamese art and other souvenirs. Here, you’ll find eating stalls inside the market where you can get a taste of hawker-style Vietnamese cuisine or simply cool off with a cold drink when the bargaining becomes too much. When night falls, restaurants around the perimeter of the market open their doors creating a vibrant street side scene filling the air with the scents of wok-fried noodles, barbecued fish and meats. One of Saigon’s oldest landmarks, Ben Thanh offers a great atmosphere that is absolutely authentically Vietnamese.
Ho Chi Minh
Ho Chi Minh City also commonly referred to as Saigon is the largest city of Vietnam. Located in southeastern Vietnam, the city surrounds the Saigon River. Ho Chi Minh City is the economic and financial centre of Vietnam, and plays an important role in the country's culture and scientific developments. Prior to Vietnamese settlement in the 17th century, the city was a scarcely populated area that had been part of historic kingdoms of Funan, Champa, and Khmer successively. With the arrival of the Vietnamese, the area became more prosperous and officials began establishing the city from 1623 to 1698. After ceded by the last Vietnamese dynasty to the French in 1862, the name Saigon was adopted and the city underwent urbanisation to become an important economic centre in the region. The city was the capital of South Vietnam until the end of the Vietnam War with North Vietnamese victory in 1975. In 1976, the government of a unified Vietnam renamed Saigon to its current official name in honour of the communist leader Ho Chi Minh.
Mariamman Hindu Temple
Mariamman Hindu Temple is a sacred Hindu Temple dedicated to the goddess of the Rain ‘Mariamman’. This temple was built in the late 19th century by traders coming from India and has been well preserved. This complex is the only Hindu temple in Saigon and is believed to have miraculous powers giving luck and wealth to its visitors. The outer wall of the Temple has a collection of interesting statues of different gods and goddesses like Mariamman, Vishnu, Brahma and Ganesha. The main hall of the complex (The Rajagopuram) stands twelve metres tall and inside you find a well maintained statue of Mariamman flanked by her protectors ‘Maduraiveeran’ and ‘Pechiamman’.
Turtle Lake
Located at the middle of Pham Ngoc Thach Street, Turtle Lake is a traffic roundabout of Pham Ngoc Thach Street with Tran Cao Van and Vo Van Tan Street. Turtle Lake attracts the tourists not only its location on the main street in the center of Saigon, but also its unique combination between Eastern and Western in architecture. Moreover, it was one of the symbols of this city that were built before 1975 and still stays nearly the same until today. The name Turtle Lake also causes a misunderstanding with visitors because actually there is no turtle at all. So, “Where is the turtle?”, “Why it called Turtle Lake?” or “Any turtles underwater?” are some very common questions which are usually asked by someone first came there.
