Highlights

Bamse Statue
Bamse (Norwegian for "big boy" or "teddy bear") (1937 – 22 July 1944) was a St. Bernard dog that became the heroic mascot of the Free Norwegian Forces during the Second World War. He became a symbol of Norwegian freedom during the war. At the onset of the Second World War, Thorodd was drafted into the Royal Norwegian Navy as a coastal patrol vessel, based in Hammerfest, and Bamse was enrolled as an official crew member on 9 February 1940. After the Nazi invasion of Norway on 9 April 1940 the Thorodd was part of the naval opposition to the Germans and had as one of its uses POW transport. Shortly before the 10 June 1940 capitulation of mainland Norway, Thorodd was one of 13 Norwegian naval vessels to escape to the UK, arriving on 17 June 1940. She was converted to a minesweeper in Rosyth from 30 June 1940 and stationed in Montrose and Dundee in Scotland, where she remained for the rest of the war. On 17 October 2006, The Duke of York unveiled a larger than life sized bronze statue of Bamse, made by Scottish sculptor Alan Herriot, on Montrose's Wharf Street. On 19 June 2009 schoolchildren from Honningsvåg and from Montrose unveiled the statue on the Honningsvåg harbour, in front of the museum (which tells his story in detail). The combined bands of the Skolekorps and Lathallan School's pipe band entertained the large crowd of supporters from Scotland, Norway, Sweden and Canada. The new statue of Bamse at Honningsvåg faces south west towards Montrose, and the Scottish statue is faces north-east towards Honningsvåg.
Honningsvag
Honningsvåg is the northernmost town in mainland Norway. It is located in Nordkapp Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county. It is also one of the smallest cities in Norway. Honningsvåg is situated at a bay on the southeastern side of the large island of Magerøya, while the famous North Cape and its visitor center are on the northern side of the island. Honningsvåg is a port of call for cruise ships, especially in the summer months. The ice-free ocean (southwestern part of the Barents Sea) provides rich fisheries and tourism is also important to the town.
Honningsvåg Church
Honningsvåg Church is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Nordkapp Municipality in Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located in the town of Honningsvåg on the eastern end of the island of Magerøya. It is the main church for the Nordkapp parish which is part of the Hammerfest prosti in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The white, neo-gothic, wooden church was built in a long church style in 1885 by the architect Jacob Wilhelm Nordan. The church seats about 220 people.
North Cape Museum
Nordkappmuseet is a small museum which applies personal contact and nice atmosphere. You find us in the centre of Honningsvåg, a few minutes from the Hurtigruten quay, cruise quay and bus station. We have guided tours in Norwegian, English and German. The exposition has texts in the following languages: Norwegian, English and German. Each year about 10.000 people from all over the world visit the North Cape museum. The North Cape museum presents and documents coastal culture and fish industry in Finnmark County, but it’s also a local museum for the North Cape municipality. The museum presents at least 5 different exhibitions every year. North Cape’s history- and museum team have built up the museum which was opened in 1982. Since 1997 the museum is in the hands of the North Cape municipality.
The Gallery "West Of The Moon"
Honningsvåg may be a small town, but it is really rich with art and this museum is a fine example of that. Local artists showcase their beautiful works at The Gallery “West of the Moon” that was established in Honningsvåg in 2000. It is decorated with interesting, artistic works and the charming place is a great place to stop in to admire Scandinavian motifs and purchase some local pieces from the artists who call this stunning area of the world home. Beautiful in every season - paper collage, prints, books and decoratives inspired by the landscape, nature and seasons of Magerøya.
