Overview

The history of Nagasaki starts from the second part of the 16th century when the Portuguese merchants first came to Japan and the samurai ruler decided to found a city with a great harbor. Highlights

Kazagashira Park
Kazagashira Park is located on the summit of Kazagashira with 152 m high and is on the other side of Inasa Mountain across Nagasaki Harbour. At the observatory, there is the statue of Sakamoto Ryoma who greatly contributed to overthrow the Tokugawa shogunate and make a new era.
Kofuku-ji Temple
Kōfuku-ji or Tōmeizan Kōfuku-ji is a Buddhist temple of the Ōbaku school of Zen established in 1624 in Nagasaki, Japan. It is an important cultural asset designated by the government. Its Mazu Hall (Masu-do) or Bodhisattva Hall (Bosa-do) is one of the few temples located in Japan of the Chinese sea goddess known as Mazu, the deified form of the medieval Fujianese shamaness Lin Moniang.
Kotai-ji Temple
In the 17th century, the flourishing of Christianity in Nagasaki made it hard for other religions to prosper. In the hope of bettering the chances of Buddhism, in 1608, Kio Ryokaku founded the temple Kotaiji. To commemorate his work, the temple Founder's Hall now houses a lifelike statue of him, and a memorial service in his name is conducted on the ninth of September.
Nagasaki
Nagasaki is the capital and the largest city of Nagasaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan. It became the sole port used for trade with the Portuguese and Dutch during the 16th through 19th centuries and the Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region have been recognized and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Part of Nagasaki was home to a major Imperial Japanese Navy base during the First Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War. At the end of World War II, the American atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki made Nagasaki the second and, to date, the last city in the world to experience a nuclear attack at 11:02 am, August 9, 1945.
Spectacles Bridge
Meganebashi or Spectacles Bridge, over the Nakashima River, was built in Nagasaki in 1634 by the Chinese monk Mokusunyoujo who is the second generation of Chinese monks living at Kofukuji Temple. It is said to be the oldest stone arch bridge in Japan along with Edo's Nihonbashi bridge and Iwakuni's Kintaikyou bridge and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property. Megane Bridge is also part of the first group of bridges built over Nakashima river.
The Kameyama Shachu Memorial Museum
The Kameyama Shachu Memorial Museum is a reconstruction of the building that housed Sakamoto Ryoma and the many men who worked alongside him. Despite its small size, many important artifacts are housed inside, including many of Sakamoto's personal effects. The most popular of these is Sakamoto's haori jacket, which is embellished with his family's crest.
