Overview

The charm of this seaport city soon becomes apparent when explored. The very heart of Genoa's Old Town area is a good place to walk around and boasts a series of narrow alleyways, ancient churches, and Renaissance-style palaces.  Dominating the area, Genoa's Porto Antico (Old Port) has had new life breathed into it and is now a particularly lively location filled with waterfront shops and eateries.

Highlights

Genoa
Located on the Gulf of Genoa in the Ligurian Sea, Genoa has historically been one of the most important ports on the Mediterranean: it is currently the busiest in Italy and in the Mediterranean Sea and twelfth-busiest in the European Union. Genoa has been nicknamed la Superba ("the proud one") due to its glorious past and impressive landmarks. Part of the old town of Genoa was inscribed on the World Heritage List (UNESCO) in 2006 as Genoa: Le Strade Nuove and the system of the Palazzi dei Rolli. The city's rich cultural history in art, music and cuisine allowed it to become the 2004 European Capital of Culture. It is the birthplace of Guglielmo Embriaco, Christopher Columbus, Andrea Doria, Niccolò Paganini, Giuseppe Mazzini, Renzo Piano and Grimaldo Canella, founder of the House of Grimaldi, among others.
Marina di Portofino
Marina di Portofino is the most famous harbor in the world, the symbol of beauty and exclusivity, it is nestled in the ancient fishing village charged with history. Today, Portofino is one of the most chic, trendy, and romantic tourist destinations of the Italian Riviera (or Liguria). Founded under the Roman Empire and named «Portus Delphini» after the dolphins that inhabited the coast, the small seaside town of Portofino, nestled in the heart of a natural park of the same name, is the most prized destination in the world for luxury yachting.
Portofino
Portofino is an Italian fishing village and holiday resort famous for its picturesque harbor and historical association with celebrity and artistic visitors. It is a comune located in the Metropolitan City of Genoa on the Italian Riviera. The town is clustered around its small harbour and is known for the colorfully painted buildings that line the shore.
Portofino Lighthouse
Portofino Lighthouse (Italian: Faro di Portofino) is an active lighthouse located in Portofino, Metropolitan City of Genoa, Liguria, northern Italy, on the western extremity of the peninsula in the Gulf of Tigullio. The lighthouse was built in 1917 and consists of a white quadrangular tower, 12 feet (3.7 m) high, with balcony and lantern, attached to a 2-storey white keeper's house. The lantern, painted in grey metallic, is positioned at 40 metres (130 ft) above sea level and emits one white flash in a 5 seconds period, visible up to a distance of 16 nautical miles (30 km; 18 mi). The lighthouse is completely automated, powered by a solar unit and is operated by the Marina Militare with the identification code number 1675 E.F.
Santa Margherita

Itinerary

10:00

A relaxing 30-40 minute drive will bring us to Rapallo from where we take a brief drive along the ‘Golden Sun Road’ towards the sophisticated resort town of Santa Margherita. A short 10-minute cruise to Portofino gives us the opportunity to view the stunning little inlets, secluded beaches, and the beautiful tree-covered hillsides.

As we enter the Bay of Portofino – once a small fishing village and now a sophisticated international tourist destination – we see the charming colored houses overlooking the square and small port. After a short sightseeing tour (on foot) we have time to explore by ourselves the quaint streets, charming shops, or maybe just ‘people watch’ whilst sitting and relaxing in one of the many pavements cafes and bars.

We return by boat to Santa Margherita where our coach is waiting to take us on our return journey to Genoa in plenty of time to rejoin our ship. Please note this tour is subject to suitable sea conditions. If conditions do not permit us to reach Portofino by boat we will travel by public bus (with our guide) to Portofino.
