Highlights

Kadriorg Palace and Park
If there’s one part of Tallinn outside Old Town that a first time visitor absolutely, definitely, unquestionably has to see, it’s Kadriorg. Though it’s only a few minutes’ walk from the centre, this quiet area is a world unto itself, a secluded neighbourhood made up of large areas of forested park criss-crossed by paths and dotted with statues and ponds. It’s also home to a number of intriguing 19th- and 20th-century villas, and the nation’s top art museums.
Parlament Building and Tall Hermann Tower
The Estonian Parliament building is located next to the walls of Toompea Castle. This is an active government building, open for tourists to observe the work of Parliament from a special balcony. The Tall Hermann Tower (Pikk Herman) is part of the Parliament building. This is the highest tower of the Tallinn city walls.
Pirita River and Beach
With its popular beach, adventure park and yacht harbour, Pirita is Tallinn's destination for summer fun and breathtakingly beautiful nature. The district is located only a few kilometres from the city centre and is easily accessible by public transport, bike or car. In the early 20th century, this seaside area began to develop into a destination for Sunday rides and bathing, and the sandy beach is still a huge draw whenever the weather turns warm.
Song Festival Grounds
Completed in 1960, Tallinn's Song Festival Grounds were the first modern post-war construction to be built in the city. Unique in Europe, they were designed by Alar Kotli, Henno Sepmann and Uno Tölpus. Their design took into account the nature of the land they were to be built on: audiences would be seated on the slope of the hill, so the song arch would need to echo sound to them. A copy of the song stage was later erected in Vilnius.
Tallinn
Located on the coast of Gulf of Finland, Tallinn is a well known city and capital of Estonia. Tallinn is an intoxicating mix of ancient church spires, glass skyscrapers, baroque palaces, appealing eateries, brooding battlements, shiny shopping malls, run-down wooden houses, and cafes set on sunny squares – with a few Soviet throwbacks in the mix, for added spice. Many relics of Tallinn’s long history survive or have been restored, especially on Toompea hill and in the old, walled Lower Town. Port of Tallinn is the biggest port authority in Estonia. If you are a lover of history and enjoy shopping on the streets, this is one city that you just can't avoid to miss.
Tallinn Old Lower Town
Lower Town, the larger part of medieval Tallinn (or Reval as it was called back then), became a member of the Hanseatic League at the end of the 13th century. Goods from around the world came in through the port and were traded on the market on Town Hall Square. Reval operated autonomously from the rest of the Estonian territories right up until Tsarist Russian times. As in the rest of the country, the real movers and shakers in Reval society were the Baltic Germans, with Ethnic Estonians for most part second-class citizens. However, Estonian peasants from surrounding areas often escaped to the city, where they could eventually be considered free.
Toompea Hill and Castle
Built on the spot where the ancient Estonians' wooden fortress stood before the 1219 Danish invasion, Tallinn's castle served for seven centuries as the seat of power for the nation's foreign masters. Now it houses the Riigikogu, Estonia’s parliament. On one corner of the castle you can see Pikk Hermann tower with the blue, black and white tricolour flag waving above it. It’s commonly recognised that whoever’s flag flies on top of this tower is the ruler of Estonia. The pink section you see in front is actually a baroque structure added in the 18th Century.

Itinerary

10:00

Once you have wandered through the park you will reach Kadriorg Palace, Once the summer residence of the Russian Czars, the baroque style palace is now home to the Museum of European Art. To the rear of the building, spread over two terraces, you will find the Upper Garden. Experience the extension of the palace interior in nature before returning to your vehicle to continue your luxury tour.

Move on to Tallinn Song Festival Grounds. This large event venue holds a very special place in Estonian’s hearts as the birthplace of the Singing Revolution. Immerse yourself in the view of the sea and the Old Town of Tallinn, a fabulous place for a photo opportunity!

Continue on to Pirita Suburb where you will find the remarkable ruins of St Birgitta Covent dating back to the 15th century. The tour then proceeds past the Forest Cemetery where you will find renowned Estonians in their final resting place. Nearby is the beachside location of the yachting complex built for the 1980 Summer Olympic Regatta.

Your professional guide will then take you to the upper part of the Old Town. After exiting the vehicle at Tall Hermann Tower, a short walk will lead you to the dominating presence of Palace Square with the pink Parliament House and the enchanting Russian Orthodox Church which has stood since 1900. After you’ve taken in the paintings and icons inside this building you will amble through the narrow cobblestone lanes to St Mary’s Cathedral located on Toompea Hill dating back to the 13th century. This impressive building was a burial ground of the rich and titled. The whitewashed walls are decorated with the elaborate coats-of-arms of Estonia’s most noble families.

Look over the Lower Town of Tallinn, once separated from the Upper Town by gates, its impressive skyline is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take the route down the historic Short Leg Lane to immerse yourself in everything the Lower Town has to offer, passing St Nicholas’ Church on your way. Bring your walking tour to a close in Town Hall Square before going on to pause and put one’s feet up while appreciating a three-course gourmet Estonian lunch in a charming Old Town restaurant. Also provided to accompany your lunch: water, tea, coffee, a glass of wine.

Throughout this luxury tour there are endless shopping opportunities in the Old Town, plenty of pretty little craft workshops in Catherine’s Palace and Muurivahe Knitwear Market.

Relax during your journey back to your cruise ship.
