Cathedral of St. Stephen in Hvar

The Cathedral of St. Stephen in Hvar is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Hvar, on island of Hvar in Split-Dalmatia County, Croatia. The most impressive building in Hvar, standing on the eastern side of the city square, at the far end of the Pjaca, where two parts of the city meet. It was built on the site of an early 6th-century Christian church and a later Benedictine convent of St Mary. The shrine of today's cathedral is the remains of a Gothic church from the 14th century. Its 15th-century pulpit, the stone polyptychs of St. Luke and The Flagellation of Christ, as well as the late Gothic crucifix, have all been preserved. St. Stephen's is a triple-aisled church with a nice 17th-century bell tower, and is a harmonious synthesis of the Renaissance, manneristic and early Baroque styles so typical of the Dalmatian architecture of the 15th and 16th centuries.

The island of Hvar is the queen of the Croatian Dalmatian islands. It has been famous since the antique because of its important strategic and nautical position, the rich of the various historical periods, the culture and natural monuments and the literature. Thanks to the mild climate, the warm winters and pleasant summers Hvar receives many guests, scientists and travellers, who are attracted by the dense mediterranean nature, rich tradition and arhitecture, and nightlife. Hvar Franciscan Monastery

An easy stroll from Hvar's square, along the sea and the waterfront soon brings you to the Franciscan monastery. Within the peace and quiet of the monastery walls, you can enjoy a rich display of museum exhibits (collections of Greek, Roman and Venetian coins, liturgical items, atlas of the ancient cartographer Ptolemaeus, rare exhibits of amphora, etc.), as well as paintings of Venetian artists like Francesco Santacroce and Palma Junior. The monastery is known for its magnificent painting of the Last Supper (2 x 8 m) which leaves everyone breathless. Some critics believe it is the work of a painter from Ravenna Matteo Ingoli, whilst others think that the painting belongs to the school of Palma Junior. One more rarity that makes the monastery famous is the 300-year old cypress that is located in the garden of the monastery.

You will be met at the port of Hvar and commence your walking tour.

Begin your walking tour through the narrow streets of the old town, embrace the charm and historic stories this lovely quaint town has to offer, your first point of the tour will be the 15th Century Franciscan monastery, here you will visit the magnificant Ranaissance Cloister, the old refectory that today holds a impressive collection of lace, manuscripts and books. The church holds a remarkable collection of colourful paintings, to which you will experience in this walking tour. As your guided visit of the Church has come to an end, you will continue your walking tour to the beautiful main square where the Cathedral of St. Stephen is located, its treasury and bell tower with its characteristic mark of the Venetian rule. Walk amongst the historic tall buildings as you stroll through the memorbale old town of Hvar. Within the main square there are cafés and restaurants if you would like to sit back and relax, and take in the wonders of this beautiful town.
