Overview

Alghero is on the North West coast of Sardinia and though it was colonised in the mid 14th century by the Spanish it still retains its Italian influences with fortified walls and a network of narrow streets surrounding the harbour. The narrow streets are mostly free of vehicles and so visitors can relax and enjoy the numerous café’s, restaurants and shops. Being a harbour town, Alghero prides itself on its freshly caught seafood.Located close to Alghero are plentiful places of interest including Grotta di Nettuno, the abandoned mine at Argentiera and Anghelu Ruju.

Alghero

Alghero is best known for its beautiful beaches, very good food at reasonable prices, and its Catalan origin, in fact it was known in the past as little Barcelona. This historic town has become one of the most popular destinations for visitors to Sardinia. The car free narrow lanes of the atmospheric old town contain numerous bars and cafes whilst the restaurants are renowned for excellent seafood. There are also two farmers markets in town. The surrounding area brings many delights for those who venture out of the city. These include the famous beaches at La Pelosa - Stintino, the eerily abandoned mining town of Argentiera and the ancient palace complex at Nuraghe di Palmavera. The coastal road south of Alghero is beautiful, an unspoilt and protected panorama of sparkling sea, lush vegetation, and rocky mountains. It leads to Bosa, a small medieval town, which has a distinctive and living historic center and many points of interest.

Alghero Cathedral

Alghero Cathedral, otherwise the Cathedral of St. Mary the Immaculate is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Alghero in the province of Sassari, Sardinia, Italy. It is located in the historic center of the city. It was the seat of the Bishop of Alghero from 1503 to 1986, and since 1986 has been that of the Bishop of Alghero-Bosa. Alghero was designated as a diocesan seat in 1503 but construction work on the cathedral did not begin until 1567. It was inaugurated in 1593 but was not finished. After several restorations it was consecrated in 1730. The church was originally in Catalan-Gothic style, as can be seen in the five chapels and ambulatory of the presbytery, which also includes the octagonal base of the bell tower. The nave and the two aisles are however in Late Renaissance style.

Capo Caccia

Capo Caccia is a rocky promontory that dominates the Bay of Alghero. This spectacular section of the coastline rises up to a height of 610 feet (186 meters) above the sea and features a network of underground caves. Enjoy superlative cliff top views then investigate subterranean caverns and passageways. According to popular history, Capo Caccia was so named because the local aristocracy used to guide their boats to the foot of the cliffs to hunt for pigeons. The Italian word for hunting is caccia.

Capo Caccia is extremely popular with tourists and famous for having some of the most magnificent views over the Gulf of Alghero. After the photo stop at Capo Caccia, the tour will continue to one of Alghero’s vineyards, once we have arrived the guide will take the tour around the vineyard explaining how the wine is produced.

After the guided tour of the vineyard, it is now time to taste the wine! There will be 3 types of wine accompanied by local appetizers.
