Agiassos is famous for its potteries and wooden carvings that can be found in the numerous art shops, but not only: also it is known throughout Greece for the church to the Virgin Mary, the Panagia ti Vrefokratousa in the center of town. The church of Panagia, a major tourist attraction on the island, is a three-aisle basilica, surrounded by high walls since it was once a monastery.

In front of the iconostasis, on inclined support stands the miracle-working icon of Our Lady dating from the 4th century AD. It was brought to Agiassos from Jerusalem by the monk Aghathon the Ephesian.
