Overview

Khujand is one of the most fascinating cities in Central Asia. The city was founded over 2,500 years ago and saw the armies of Alexander the Great pass through (Alexander’s wife Roxana was from this region), the arrival of Islam in the 7th century, the destruction wrought by the Mongols in the 13th century, and the great flowering of the Khujand in the Middle Ages, with science, culture, and business growth with the Great Silk Road. Today it sits as the second largest metropolis in Tajikistan, a prosperous and lively city that bridges wider Tajikistan with its Uzbek neighbors.

Highlights

Historical Museum of Sughd
The Historical Museum of Sughd is a regional history museum in Khujand, Tajikistan. It has a wide range of artifacts related to the history of the Sughd region of Tajikistan.
Khujand
Khujand, sometimes spelled Khodjent and known as Leninabad from 1936 to 1991, is the second-largest city of Tajikistan and the capital of Tajikistan's northernmost province, Sughd. Khujand is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia, dating back about 2,500 years.
Khujand Fortress
Throughout the whole history of Khujand, the city’s heart was its castle. Over 2,500 years, the Khujand fortress expanded together with the city, was destroyed by the conquerors, rebuilt anew, but always continued to be a symbol of endurance of the people.
Mausoleum of Sheikh Muslihiddin Khujandi
This large memorial complex located in the historical part of the city was erected on the tomb of Muslihiddin Khudjandi - the ruler of Khujand, a poet who lived in the 12th century. The legends say that sheikh Muslihiddin was a holy miracle-maker. First he was buried in Undzhi settlement (Khujand suburb) but his admirers transferred his remains to the city and built the mausoleum on this place.
Panjshanbe Bazaar
Panjshanbe bazaar is the market where the locals do their ordinary shopping but it is a very interesting place if you are visiting the city for the first time.
