Highlights

Machico
Machico is a municipality, parish, and city in the southeast part of the island of Madeira, in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The easternmost municipality on the island, it is also the third most populous area; its population was 21,828 (in 2011). The town, proper, had a population of 10,894 in 2001.
Pico do Arieiro
Pico do Arieiro, at 1,818 m high, is Madeira Island's third-highest peak. Most days, visitors can stand and look down on the clouds. The air is fresh and clear and the sun is very bright. On a clear day it is possible to see the neighboring island of Porto Santo, 30 miles to the northeast.
Porto da Cruz
Porto da Cruz is one of the parishes belonging to the Machico council. Its name came from a cross (cruz) that was placed by the explorers on the bay once used as port (porto). Porto da Cruz is also famous for its wine. Known as 'vinho seco americano' (dry red wine made of a type of grape called americana), this local product is the theme for a celebration usually happening in September.
Santana
Santana is a municipality on the north coast of the Portuguese island of Madeira. It’s known for its Casas Típicas de Santana, traditional stone houses with steep, triangular-shaped thatched roofs. Examples of the houses can also be seen at the Madeira Theme Park, which has exhibits on the island’s history, culture and traditions. The white, baroque-style Igreja de Santana church has a gilded altarpiece.
