Overview

The visit to Rhine Falls is the most famous highlight for travelers to this region of Switzerland. Small boats run between the two shores and take tourists directly to a cloud of mist above the seething water, or to a jetty with a ladder leading up to a cliff just above the falls. Rhine Falls is considered the largest flat waterfall in Europe. One of the German poets wrote about Rhine Falls: "Oh, traveler, be careful and hold your heart tightly in your hands - I almost lost mine from the joy of contemplating the powerful play of huge masses falling and breaking the surface of the water."

Highlights

Munot Fortress
The Munot is a circular 16th-century fortification in the center of the Swiss city of Schaffhausen. It is surrounded by vineyards and serves as the city's symbol. The ring-shaped fortress was built in the 16th century. Today, it is a tourist attraction and hosts various events.
Rhine Falls
The Rhine Falls is a waterfall located in Switzerland and the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The falls are located on the High Rhine on the border between the cantons of Schaffhausen (SH) and Zürich (ZH), between the municipalities of Neuhausen am Rheinfall (SH) and Laufen-Uhwiesen/Dachsen (ZH), next to the town of Schaffhausen in northern Switzerland. They are 150 metres (490 ft) wide and 23 metres (75 ft) high. In the winter months, the average water flow is 250 m3/s (8,800 cu ft/s), while in the summer, the average water flow is 600 m3/s (21,000 cu ft/s).
Schaffhausen
Schaffhausen is a Swiss town on the upper Rhine River, in a wine-growing area near the German border. Baroque buildings with bay windows and decorated facades dot the medieval old town, dominated by the 16th-century Munot Fortress. Nearby, the High Gothic church of St. Johann is known for its acoustics. Kloster Allerheiligen, a former Benedictine monastery, includes a Romanesque cathedral.
Zurich
The city of Zurich, a global center for banking and finance, lies at the north end of Lake Zurich in northern Switzerland. The picturesque lanes of the central Altstadt (Old Town), on either side of the Limmat River, reflect its pre-medieval history. Waterfront promenades like the Limmatquai follow the river toward the 17th-century Rathaus (town hall).
