Highlights

Itinerary

08:00

First, you will see the Victoria Terminus Station, which is modeled on the St Pancras Station in London and is undoubtedly Raj’s piece de resistance, complete with carved stone friezes, stained glass windows, and flying buttresses. it is gothic architecture at its best and an awesome site which most citizens view with deep pride, whilst atop the central dome stands the triumphant figure of Progress.  Your guide will happily give even more information on the site to you.

Next, you will visit Flora Fountain, which stands in the heart of the commercial Fort Area.  The beautifully sculptured fountain was erected in memory of Governor Sir Henery Bartle Edward Frere, as a tribute to his contribution to the building of Mumbai.  Then it’s on to the most famous monument in all of Mumbai, the Gateway of India.  This is the starting point for most tourists wishing to explore the city – it was originally built as a triumphal arch to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary, yet ironically was also the gate the final British ship left in 1947 and today draws hundreds of tourists and citizens to it every day.

Following this, you will have a visit to Nariman Point, the leading business center in Mumbai, previously known as Bombay. From here make your way north to view the rest of Marine drive which leads out to the Arabian sea and draws attention from many visitors who come to breathe the fresh air and view the beautiful sunset.  Then you are taken to the hanging garden, perched at the top of Malabar Hill opposite the Kamala Nehru Park where you can have an even more stunning view of the sunset than the Marine Drive.

Afterward, your guide will take you to explore Mani Bhawan, the old Mumbai residence of Mahatma Gandhi, a two-storied structure that now houses a library with over 2000 books, a photo exhibition of his life, and well-preserved memorabilia including an old charkha (spinning wheel) which Gandhi used to use.  Today it is visited by many old Gandhians who wish to pay homage to their hero and demonstrate the art of spinning your own yarn.

The next stop on your tour is Haji Ali, a venerated tomb of Muslims where people from all over India come to pay their respects.  Located on an island off the shoreline of Worli, the Mosque looks stunning amidst the blue sea water which makes it the most popular landmark of Bombay.  After that is a brief stop at a Dhobighat, a traditional outdoor Indian laundry area where the ‘ghats’ work with techniques passed on through generations.
