Highlights

Forbidden City
The Forbidden City is a palace complex in central Beijing, China. It houses the Palace Museum, and was the former Chinese imperial palace and state residence of the Emperor of China from the Ming dynasty (since the Yongle Emperor) to the end of the Qing dynasty, between 1420 and 1924. The Forbidden City served as the home of Chinese emperors and their households and was the ceremonial and political center of the Chinese government for almost 500 years.
Great Wall of China
The Great Wall of China is the collective name of a series of fortification systems generally built across the historical northern borders of China to protect and consolidate territories of Chinese states and empires against various nomadic groups of the steppe and their polities. Several walls were being built from as early as the 7th century BC by ancient Chinese states;selective stretches were later joined together by Qin Shi Huang (220–206 BC), the first emperor of China. Little of the Qin wall remains. Later on, many successive dynasties have built and maintained multiple stretches of border walls. The most well-known sections of the wall were built by the Ming dynasty (1368–1644).

Itinerary

08:00

Moving on with your tour you will head to Forbidden City. Located in the very heart of Beijing, it was firstly built in the Ming Dynasty. The Forbidden City remained the residence of the ancient Chinese emperors for nearly five hundred years, from the 15th century to the early 20th century, it was a powerful symbol of imperial power before. Now it is open to the public as a national museum that mere civilians were once denied access. Experiencing a long history, many of its buildings have been repaired or rebuilt, but their basic form and layout have remained true to their original state.

After spending a wonderful time in the Forbidden City, you will have some free time to enjoy lunch (Payable on the day approx. £8.00) at one of the local restaurants. Your knowledgeable guide will be able to advise the best places to grab a bite to eat.

Before leaving to Beijin airport you will visit the Great Wall, and upon arrival you will make you way to the popular section of the Wall at Juyongguan. The Great Wall climbs across superb mountain scenery approx 70km northwest of Beijing, and was originally built to protect Chinese empires against invasions. Some of the Walls were originally built around the 7th Century BC, and joined together later to create The Great Wall. With its high battlements and watchtowers, the wall provides wonderful views across the hills. Your guided tour of the wall will take approx 1.5hrs.
