Mount Vesuvius
Mount Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy, about 9 km east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is one of several volcanoes which form the Campanian volcanic arc
Naples
Naples, a city in southern Italy, sits on the Bay of Naples. Nearby is Mount Vesuvius, the still-active volcano that destroyed nearby Roman town Pompeii. Dating to the 2nd millennium B.C., Naples has centuries of important art and architecture. The city's cathedral, the Duomo di San Gennaro, is filled with frescoes. Other major landmarks include the lavish Royal Palace and Castel Nuovo, a 13th-century castle.
Ruins of Pompeii
Pompeii, Italian Pompei, preserved ancient Roman city in Campania, Italy, 14 miles (23 km) southeast of Naples, at the southeastern base of Mount Vesuvius. It was built on a spur formed by a prehistoric lava flow to the north of the mouth of the Sarnus (modern Sarno) River.
The Basilica of Pompeii
The Basilica, with its extension of 1,500 square metres, was the most sumptuous building of the Forum, and its space was used to carry out business and for the administration of justice. It is accessed from the Forum through five entrances separated by tuff pillars; inside it is divided into three naves with two rows of brick columns with Ionic capitals. A richly decorated suggestum, where judges sat while judicial affairs were managed, is located at the centre of the short western side. The space was enhanced with an equestrian statue, whereas the walls are richly decorated with stucco like large blocks of marble. The Basilica is dated back to 130-120 BC and is one of the oldest examples of this type of building in the entire Roman world. It was excavated since the 19th century, when investigations in the Forum square area began.

Itinerary

10:00

This popular half-day tour incorporates a tour of Naples together with a visit to the ruins of Pompeii – taking you back to the fateful day in 79 AD when neighboring volcano Vesuvius erupted. The air-conditioned transportation departs from and returns to the port entrance, which is a very short distance from where your cruise ship docks.

The tour of Naples includes a trip to the Piazza del Plebiscito to see from the bus the Royal Palace, then go on to see the Town Hall Square and finally, the Egg Castle.

Driving to Pompeii, we’ll enjoy fabulous views of the city of Mount Vesuvius and the beautiful island of Capri to the right. Pompeii was totally destroyed by Vesuvius’s eruption in 79AD, which killed all 20,000 inhabitants of the city. During the 1860s, the site was very carefully excavated, and today visitors can wander the streets, visit the shops and even enter homes left exactly as they were minutes before the disaster.

Experience the immense history of such fascinating sites such as The Forum, the Thermal Bath, the private homes, and possibly the infamous ‘Lupanare’ brothel!

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended. As this tour involves walking on uneven ground, including the negotiation of large slabs on the streets of Pompeii, it is not recommended for guests with mobility difficulties or wheelchair users.

You’ll return to Naples Port with your driver in plenty of time to re-join your cruise ship
