Highlights

Akerselva river
The river Akerselva starts at Maridalsvannet – Oslo’s largest lake and a recommended starting point for the 8-kilometer hike along the course of the river. Akerselva was the cradle of Norway’s industrialisation in the second half of the 19th century. Back then the river gave power to saw mills, textile factories and mechanical workshops. Today Akerselva plays a valuable role as a “green lung”; a popular recreational area with green parks and luxuriant nature. Many of the old factory buildings along the river have been refurbished and now house cafés, galleries, offices and schools. The nature trails along the river are great for hiking, biking or running.
Akershus Castle and Fortress
The building of Akershus Castle and Fortress was commenced in 1299 under king Håkon V. The medieval castle, which was completed in the 1300s, had a strategical location at the very end of the headland, and withstood a number of sieges throughout the ages. King Christian IV (1588-1648) had the castle modernised and converted into a Renaisssance castle and royal residence. The fortress area is a popular venue for major events, including concerts, public holiday celebrations and ceremonies.
Frogner Park
The largest park in central parts of Oslo and a popular recreational area for people from all over the city. Inside the park you find Vigeland Sculpture Park, one of Oslo's most popular attractions. On a nice day the park is full of people, here you can go for a run, walk the dog, have a picnic or barbecue, play badminton or just enjoy the sun. Frogner Park has Norway's biggest collection of roses; a total of 14,000 plants of 150 different species. Frogner Stadium and Frognerbadet open-air pool are located in the corner of the park that faces Majorstua. In the corner near Frogner plass you can visit Frogner Manor House and the Museum of Oslo.
Oslo Cathedral
The parish church for downtown Oslo was first consecrated in 1697, and in 1950 it was restored back to its original baroque interior. Oslo Cathedral is the main church for the Church of Norway Diocese of Oslo, and is used for weddings and funerals by the Norwegian Royal Family and the Norwegian Government. The pulpit, altar piece and organ front with acanthus carvings are all originals. The large ceiling murals were painted by Hugo Lous Mohr between 1936 and 1950, and the stained glass windows are by Emanuel Vigeland. The chapel on the south side, designed by architect Arnstein Arneberg, were completed in 1950. "The bazaar halls" around the cathedral were built in the period 1841-1858.
Oslo Opera House
Oslo's Opera House is located right at the harbour, with an angled, white exterior that appears to rise from the water. It invites its visitors to climb its roof and enjoy panoramic views of Oslo and the fjord, all year round. Large-scale windows at street level provide the public with glimpses of rehearsals and workshop activities. The building's interior is mainly oak, and the main hall is shaped like a horseshoe, reminiscent of classical theatres of the past. The opera is designed by the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta, and has received several prestigious awards.
Royal Palace park
The park that surrounds the Royal Palace was built during the 1840's. It is characterised by its many majestic trees, well-kept lawns and beautiful ponds. Despite its royal affiliations, the park is a popular recreational area, and it even served as a base for Oslo's hippies in the mid-1960's.
Viking Ship Museum
Museum on the Bygdøy peninsula with the world's best-preserved Viking ships and finds from Viking tombs around the Oslo Fjord. The adventure film The Vikings Alive is screened throughout the day on the ceilings and wall inside the museum. The Viking Ship Museum shows discoveries from the Gokstad, Oseberg and Tune ships, plus small boats, sledges, a beautiful cart, tools, textiles and household utensils.
