Highlights

Göta Square
Göta Square is a public square in Gothenburg, at the southern end of Avenyn, the city's main boulevard. The square was inaugurated when Gothenburg held a major international industrial exhibition, 1923, celebrating the city's 300th anniversary. Götaplatsen is Gothenburg's cultural hub, enclosed by the Gothenburg Concert Hall (where the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra resides), the Gothenburg Museum of Art, the Gothenburg City Theatre and the City Library. At the center of the square presides the Poseidon statue by Carl Milles - the statue has become one of the symbols of the city.
Gothenburg Cathedral
Gothenburg Cathedral is a cathedral in Gothenburg, the second-largest city in Sweden. It is the seat of the bishop of the diocese of Gothenburg in the Church of Sweden. The present cathedral is the third to be built on the same ground. The church was dedicated in 1633 and named Gustavi kyrka after the king who, in the previous year, had fallen in the battle of Lützen. It got its status as a cathedral in 1665 and was then renamed Gustavi Domkyrka, called Domkyrkan. In the conflagrations of 1721 and 1802, the previous churches were completely destroyed, and in 1815 the present cathedral was dedicated by Bishop Johan Wingård. The architect was Carl Wilhelm Carlberg and the style is Classical.
Gustaf Adolf`s Square
Gustaf Adolf`s Square is a town square located in central Gothenburg. It was named Stortorget (the Big Square) until 1854 when a statue of the founding father of Gothenburg, King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden was raised. Surrounding the square are the city hall, including the law court extension (by Gunnar Asplund), the bourse, and the main harbour canal of Gothenburg.
Haga
Haga is a city district in Gothenburg, renowned for its picturesque wooden houses, 19th century-atmosphere, and cafés. Originally a working-class suburb of the city with a rather bad reputation, it was gradually transformed into a popular visiting place for tourists and Gothenburgers. A major renovation of the area was made in the 1980s; houses were either renovated or torn down and replaced by post-modernistic replicas. Today, Haga has a population of about 4,000 people (4,093 in 2006), a much smaller population compared to 15,000 people one hundred years ago – an indication of the gentrification the district has gone through. Haga is also a parish with the same borders as the city district. It is the smallest parish in Sweden.
Maritime Museum of Gothenburg
Maritime Museum is a floating maritime museum on the Göta Älv, in Gothenburg. Maritiman’s fleet currently consists of thirteen vessels safely moored at Packhuskajen in the heart of Gothenburg. From various eras, and with various purposes, functions, as well as varied history. The oldest being HSwMS Sölve from 1875.
Skansen Kronan
Skansen Kronan is a redoubt in the district of Haga of Gothenburg. Skansen Kronan was built in the latter half of the 17th century according to the plans of Erik Dahlbergh. Skansen Kronan was introduced in 1698 and was fitted with 23 guns. The roof was not completed until 1700. Skansen has 4-5 meter thick walls made of granite, gneiss and diabase. Skansen Kronan was never attacked and the cannons on the inside have never been used. The fortress and the twin counterpart, Skansen Lejonet, were built as part of the defenses against possible Danish attack on Gothenburg from the south, and thus had a similar purpose as the Älvsborg fortress. The fortress - originally built outside the city walls - is today situated in the city center of Gothenburg on a hill in the city district of Haga. It was used as a military museum until 2004. Today Skansen Kronan is a private facility for conferences and private parties.
The Avenue
The Avenue (Swedish: Kungsportsavenyen) is the main boulevard of Gothenburg. Designed in the mid 19th century as the first middle-class residential district outside the bastions of the fortified heart of the city, the design of Avenyn was inspired by established formal European streets like the Champs-Élysées in Paris and the Ringstraße in Vienna. The layout is a result of an international town planning competition. With a total length of about 1000 meters, it stretches from the moat at the edge of the oldest part of Gothenburg and ends at the Götaplatsen square. At the moat, it connects to the narrower street Östra Hamngatan (formerly a canal), and the Avenue takes its full name after Kungsporten, the "King's Gate" which was located at the point in the fortifications where Östra Hamngatan ends. The gate and the rest of the fortifications were demolished in the 19th century and replaced by a park. Initially, a residential street for the wealthy businessmen of the city, Avenyn passes the Stora teatern, the Neo-Renaissance theatre and opera building from 1859, and today has a major concentration of pubs, clubs and restaurants.
The Garden Society of Gothenburg
The Garden Society of Gothenburg is a park and horticultural garden in central Gothenburg. The park was founded in 1842 by King Carl XIV Johan, on the initiative of the amateur botanist Henric Elof von Normann. In the park, there is an acclaimed rose garden with some 4,000 roses of 1,900 species. The rose garden has been awarded stars in the Michelin Green Guide. There is also a 19th-century palm house, greenhouses, sculptures, a restaurant and cafés. It is one of the best-preserved 19th-century parks in Europe.
The Gothenburg opera house
The Gothenburg opera house is an opera house at Lilla Bommen in Gothenburg, Sweden. It is relatively new: construction started in September 1989 after significant local commitment in the late 1980s (with as many as 6,000 contributors to the new house) and it was completed with great speed. Groundbreaking took place in June 1991, and the building was inaugurated in October 1994. It hosted Melodifestivalen 2000, the Swedish national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest.
The Museum of Gothenburg
The Museum of Gothenburg is in the city center of Gothenburg. It is located in the 18th-century East India House, originally built as the Swedish East India Company offices. The city museum was established in 1861. The City Museum is a cultural history museum. It displays Gothenburg and West Sweden's history, from the Viking Age to the present day. There is a permanent exhibition about the Swedish East India Company. However, the maritime history of Gothenburg has a separate museum of its own. The museum is also used as a public forum for the Gothenburg Town Planners to display new ideas and visions of the city for the citizens.
