Overview

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark; it is a huge city with several district articles containing sightseeing, restaurant and nightlife. Copenhagen was a fishing village until the middle of the 12th century. Fortified by Bishop Absalon in 1167 and because of its harbour, it became a place of commercial importance and was repeatedly attacked by the Hanseatic towns.

Highlights

Amalienborg castle
Situated between the city and the harbour, Amalienborg is a major work of Danish architecture designed by the architect Nicolai Eigtved in the 1750s. Four palaces surround Amalienborg Palace Square, with its equestrian statue of King Frederik V. The palaces were originally built as residences for four high-ranking aristocrats, but when the old Christiansborg Palace burnt down in 1794 the royal family took up residence at Amalienborg. Since then Denmark’s reigning monarchs have lived in Amalienborg’s palaces.
Copenhagen
Copenhagen is a metropolis with a small-town feel. It is compact, safe, ecofriendly and efficient, and with its extensive green areas, a harbor so clean that you can swim in it, and a world-famous bike culture, it is a city for life. It is not a coincidence that Copenhagen has been named World’s Most Livable City and the Danes have been ranked World’s Happiest People numerous times.
Little Mermaid
At Langelinje Pier you will find one of Copenhagen's most famous tourist attractions: The sculpture of The Little Mermaid. 23 August 2013 she turned 100 years old. The Little Mermaid was a gift from Danish brewer Carl Jacobsen to the City of Copenhagen. The sculpture is made of bronze and granite and was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale about a mermaid who gives up everything to be united with a young, handsome prince on land. Every morning and evening she swims to the surface from the bottom of the sea and, perched on her rock in the water, she stares longingly towards the shore hoping to catch a glimpse of her beloved prince.
Nyhavn
Originally, Nyhavn was a busy commercial port where ships from all over the world would dock. The area was packed with sailors, ladies of pleasure, pubs and alehouses. Today the beautiful old houses have been renovated and restaurants dominate the old port. Nyhavn is filled with people enjoying the relaxed atmosphere by the canal, jazz music and great food.
