Monastery of 40 Saints Saranda
The Monastery of the Forty Saint Martyrs is a ruined Eastern Orthodox monastery overlooking the coastal city of Sarandë in southern Albania. The monastery was erected during the 6th century AD and possibly became for at least one millennium the most important pilgrimage site in the Ionian Sea region.
Saranda
Sarandë is a resort on the Albanian Riviera, in southern Albania. Sandwiched between the Ionian Sea and hills of olive groves, the town is on a horseshoe-shaped bay, edged by beaches and a promenade. In the center are the archaeological remains of a 5th-century synagogue, later an early Christian basilica. Intricate floor mosaics are still evident. The 16th-century Lëkurësi Castle is on a hilltop above the town.
The Blue Eye Saranda
The "Blue Eye" is a water spring and natural phenomenon occurring near the village of Muzinë in Finiq municipality, southern Albania. A popular tourist attraction, the clear blue water of the river can be seen from a depth of more than fifty metres.

Itinerary

10:00

After meeting your guide, the tour will commence with a morning tour of Saranda. Saranda is derived from the name of the Byzantine Monastery of Agioi Saranda which means “Forty Saints” honoring the Forty Martyrs of Sebaste. Here, we will visit the ruins of Synagogue – Bazilika before being transferred 2 kilometers south of Saranda.

Situated on a dominating hill is the Castle of Lekursi which was built by Sultan Suleiman during his campaign against Corfu. From Lekursi Castle you will enjoy magnificent views of Saranda Town, the Ionian Sea, and the island of Corfu. We will then head to the hypnotic pool of deep-blue water known to the locals as “Syri I kaltër” or the Blue Eye.

This enchanting spring resembles the iris of a human eye and it said to have blocked off to the general population during the communist days and was only reserved for the elites.
