Highlights

Algar do Carvao
The Algar do Carvão is an ancient lava tube or volcanic vent located in the central part of the island of Terceira in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. It lies within the civil parish of Porto Judeu in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo.
Ponta Delgada
Ponta Delgada, on São Miguel Island, is the capital of the Azores archipelago of Portugal. The striking, 3-arched city gates and the Gothic-style Church of St. Sebastian are near the harbor. The Convent and Chapel of Our Lady of Hope houses a revered image of Christ. The Carlos Machado Museum offers diverse artifacts of Azorean culture. The city is a gateway to the crater lakes of Sete Cidades, to the northwest. Ponta Delgada began as a simple fishing village whose fishermen were once attracted by its safe coves but soon began to play the role of the main port of São Miguel Island. The city grew and in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the churches and manor houses flourished and still today they integrate the historic center.
Sete Cidades lakes
Lagoa das Sete Cidades "Lagoon of the Seven Cities" is a twin lake situated in the crater of a dormant volcano on the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores. It consists of two small, ecologically different lakes connected by a narrow strait, which is crossed by a bridge. The volcano is located on the western third of the island of São Miguel. The Lagoa das Sete Cidades part of a natural landscape of communitarian interest: it is the largest body of water in the region and one of the most important freshwater resources in the archipelago.

Itinerary

10:00

Take your first stop at one of the impressive viewpoints, a hotspot in the area. With an altitude of 560 meters, you will see the blue and green lakes below which were created after the caldera collapse. A large cauldron-like hollow forms shortly after the Volcanic eruption.

See the elements of the landscape of the caldera, The village of Sete Cidades, and the vast water mass of the Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul.

Head over to the Santiago Viewpoint to enjoy your next stop. A beautiful ‘green bowl’ lake surrounded by lush Japanese Cedars with an altitude of 334 meters and over 700 meters long.

Take a short drive until we arrive in the village of Sete Cidades. With around 800 inhabitants the parish town is in the center of the municipality of Ponta Delgada and evokes stories of the legends linked to its largest lakes, one blue and one green.

The village is the perfect stop for a little souvenir shopping or a bite to eat. With its many shops, restaurants, and cafes you will be spoilt for choice. Why not take some time to visit Sao Nicholas Church?

Sete Cidades is one of the most special places on Sao Miguel, on the bridge that crosses the two lakes and it’s situated in the crater of an ancient volcano, the church of St. Nicholas, with its road covered by a towering Araucaria dating back to the construction of the temple in the year 1849. The inside is small and secluded, and on the outside, in addition to the pine, you will find beautiful flowering shrubs, as well as hydrangeas, the most popular flower in the Azores.

With your day no drawing to a close you will have just enough time for 1 more stop. The Carvao Viewpoints will give you the opportunity to observe all of the different volcanic complexes of the island, as well as the verdant mountains and coastal cliffs where the effects of volcanism can be seen.

Sit back and relax as we start your journey back to the cruise port in plenty of time for your ship’s departure.
