Highlights

Canton Tower
Located on the banks of the Pear (Zhujiang) River, Canton Tower stands across from the new main central business district of Guangzhou and creates a visual axis through the center of the city’s tallest skyscraper cluster. Canton Tower, also known as the Guangzhou TV & Sightseeing Tower, is the iconic tower and landmark of Guangzhou. With the height of 600 meters, it is the tallest TV tower of China and the third tallest TV tower in the world. If there is only one place to go in Guangzhou, Canton Tower has to be at the top of the list. Canton Tower is also famous for its "Slim Waist" which is an architectural marvel.
Guangzhou
Guangzhou is the capital and the sub-provincial city of Guangdong Province in the southern part of the People's Republic of China. The city is also known by an older English-language name, Canton. It is a port on the Pearl River, navigable to the South China Sea, and is located about 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Hong Kong. As of the 2000 census, the city has a population of 6 million, and a metropolitan population of roughly 8.5 million (though some estimates are as high as 12.6 million) making it the most populous city in the province and the third most populous metropolitan area in mainland China.
Pearl River
The Pearl River in Guangzhou has a length of more than 2,000 kilometers (about 1,243 miles) and is the third longest river in China. It is composed of four separate river systems. These four rivers join up in Guangzhou, flow for about 70 kilometers (43.5 miles), and then pour into the South Sea. The section flowing through Guangzhou City is the 'Pearl River' that most people are familiar with. In ancient times, it was called 'The Pearl Sea' for its 2,000 meter-wide (about 2,187 yards) channel. Later, the channel gradually shrunk, and now it is only 180 meters wide (about 197 yards). Its name is said to derive from a huge boulder in the river bed. This rock, with the name of 'Sea Pearl', is so round and smooth that it looks like a large, shining pearl.
