Overview

Taichung is a thriving modern city with a population of one million, located a forty-minute flight from Taipei and at the same time one of the historical centers of Taiwan, founded in the imperial era. Among its attractions is the largest statue of the Laughing Buddha on the island. Taichung has hundreds of Buddhist and Taoist temples and sanctuaries, as well as temples dedicated to local deities. Together with your guide, you will visit some of the main attractions in the old town area.

Highlights

Paochueh Temple
Built in 1927, Paochueh Temple is located on Jianxing Road in Beitun district. The original main hall of the temple was a classic Japanese-style drum tower. To protect it, the original hall is now surrounded with concrete walls. The most renowned parts of the temple include Yu-ai (Kindness) Bell Tower, Chi-bao (Seven Treasure) Tower and the seven-story-tall Maitreya Statue which is the most noticeable landmark of Paochueh Temple. In front of the Statue sits numerous statues of the happy buddha under cherry blossom trees that will come into full bloom at the arrival of spring.
Taichung City
Taichung is an industrial city on the western side of central Taiwan. It’s a gateway for exploring the island’s mountainous interior, including nature areas like Sun Moon Lake, popular for boating and hiking. In the bustling city center are museums, temples, and the ornate brick Taichung Station, a legacy of the Japanese colonial period (1895–1945). Among the activities to catch when visiting Taichung: the world-class science museum, the stunning architecture at the National Taichung Theater, the quality National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, the colorful Rainbow Village, sunset over Kaomei Wetlands, and hiking in the nearby hills at Dakeng. There are also many famous night markets that provide night-time excitement. Here you can enjoy delicious food and drink, and find cheap and interesting items for sale.
Taichung Confucius Temple
The Taichung Confucian Temple is a Confucian temple in North District, Taichung, Taiwan. The construction of the temple began in 1972 and completed in 1976. The temple was constructed in Song Dynasty architectural style following the layout of Qufu Confucian Temple in Shandong. It sits in a 20,000 m2 of a complex area. In the Chinese world, the veneration of Confucius often is related to politics. Taichung Confucius Temple is not an exception, as it was built in the 70s to support the claim of the Nationalist government as the legitimate heir of the classical Chinese culture.
Taichung Old station
Taichung station is a railway station in Taichung, Taiwan served by Taiwan Railways Administration. It is served by all TRA services along the route. The station was originally constructed in 1905 in a wooden building architectural style and started its operation in 1908. In 1917, it was rebuilt as a red brick structure with Renaissance architectural style. On 16 October 2016, the elevated station was inaugurated in which the ground-level station was shut down. The first train that arrived at the elevated station was at 06:28. The ceremony was attended by President Tsai Ing-wen and Transportation and Communication Minister Hochen Tan.
Taichung Park
Taichung Park is the oldest park in Taichung city. Built in the Japanese-ruling era and with a space of 10 acres, the park base at that time was the garden, named Ruixuan and actually donated by the Lin family in Wufeng, together with the old Beimen Building. Taichung Park features many pretty landscapes, such an artificial lake, pavilion, arch bridge, etc. There are also lots of recreational equipments, like outdoor stadium, playground, and tennis court. Some extraordinary European-style building and Houxing Pavilion were constructed in 1908 in celebration of the launch of the Taiwan Railway stretching from north to south in Taiwan. Houxing Pavilion has also been the symbol of Taichung City since the Japanese-ruling era and it’s hence officially declared as a city-designated historical site in 1999.
Yizhong Street
Yizhong Street is a street located in North District, Taichung, Taiwan. It is located between Sanmin Rd., Yizhong St., Taiping Rd., Yucai St., Yucai South St. and Yucai North St.. In 2006, according to the survey conducted by National Chung Hsing University, it is elected as the most popular shopping area in Taichung.

Next, you will explore a Taichung favorite street – the Yizhong night market, where you can get plenty of street food, restaurants, shops.

Continuing your walking tour you will visit Taichung Confucius Temple. The Temple takes up almost a block and it is a peaceful spot to take a break from the city.

The last stop of the tour is Paochueh Temple which is known for its great statue of Buddha.
