Highlights

Gagra
Gagra is a town in Abkhazia sprawling for 5 km on the northeast coast of the Black Sea, at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains. Its subtropical climate made Gagra a popular health resort in Imperial Russian and Soviet times. Gagra occupies a narrow coastal belt and the slopes of the Gagra Range, which are covered with thick forests. The summers are very warm (average August temperature of 23° C), and the winters are mild (average January temperature of 6° C). The season lasts the whole year round, and swimming extends from May through October. Along the coast of the Black Sea stretches a beautiful seafront and park (about 14 sq km in area) with ponds and rich subtropical vegetation. Gagra has picturesque environs (the gorges of the Zhvava-Kvara and Tsikherva rivers), and to the south of the city is located the new health resort of Pitsunda. The industry of Gagra is mainly connected with services to the health resort; it includes a meat-packing complex, a dairy, a winery, and a fish-processing plant, among others.
Gagra Colonnade
One of the symbols of the city is the 60-meter Gagra colonnade. Construction was begun right after the Great Patriotic War and was completed in 10 years. The result is a beautiful multi-arched structure in the Moorish style: four towers connected by small arcades. In the spans of snow-white arches, you can see the blue sky and silhouettes of palm trees, and if you come closer, you will see the sea: behind the columns, the entrance to the beach opens, stretching in a long strip along the entire city. From the side of the city, the colonnade borders the square, in the center of which is the most famous fountain with a sculpture of a white dove, symbolizing peace.
Mamdzishkha
Mamdzishkha - a mountain in Abkhazia; located six kilometers from the city of Gagra. Height - 1873 meters above sea level. On the reverse side, the Mamdzishkha ridge adjoins it, along which you can go down to the famous Blue Lake. At the beginning of the 20th century, a phaeton road was designed to the top of the mountain - a winding serpentine 30 kilometers long, which, under Soviet rule, was almost completely covered with asphalt. At the top, it was planned to create a ski resort with a cable car and hotels. Observation platforms are arranged along the road at different heights. In good weather, a magnificent panorama of the Black Sea coast from Sukhum to Sochi, especially to Gagra and Pitsunda can be seen from the top. All the main roads connecting the republic with Russia pass along it. The entire mountain is covered with impenetrable green mass, except for the very top. Because of the strong winds, only grass grows on the top of the mountain. The top of Mamdzishkhi is located in the zone of alpine meadows.
Restaurant Gagripsh
"Gagripsh" ("Gagrapsh") is a restaurant and one of the symbols of the city of Gagra in Abkhazia. Located opposite the fountain in the Primorsky Park in the Old Gagra area. The name of the restaurant comes from the river of the same name that flows next to it. The wooden clock building was brought disassembled from Scandinavia in 1902. This building was bought at the world exhibition in Paris by the founder of the resort, Prince Alexander of Oldenburg. The building of the "Gagra dacha" was brought to Abkhazia and assembled on the spot. The entire structure is assembled without metal fasteners. In 1903, the construction of the building was completed, and on January 9, 1903, the grand opening of the Gagra resort took place there. This hall was visited by Emperor Nicholas II, Joseph Stalin, famous writers and singers.
White Rocks Beach
Gagra is known for the nearby unique natural phenomenon called "White Rocks". This is the name of the beach 16 kilometers along the highway towards Gagra from the Russian border. The beach was named so because of the white rocks dropping directly onto the strip of beach pebbles. The silhouettes of the rocks are reminiscent of bizarre figures of fish and animals. On the White Rocks beach you can meet lonely fishermen and rare vacationers, but most often the beaches are empty.
