Overview

According to a local legend, Nakhchivan was founded by the biblical Noah: after the Flood, the Ark washed up on a mountain near modern Nakhchivan. Various sources give the approximate date of the city's formation as 1500 BC, and the city was first mentioned in the work of the Greek scientist Ptolemy "Geography" in the second century BC. So Nakhchivan has a long and rich history and is one of the oldest cities in Azerbaijan. You have a great opportunity to explore the city and its surroundings on our two-day tour.

Highlights

Alinja Castle
Alinja Castle - a medieval fortress sitting atop a cragged mountaintop in the Julfa region. The site is actually a recent reconstruction of the former fortress used by Nakhchivan’s various ruling dynasties of the Middle Ages, including the Seljuks, Atabeys, and Safavids. The castle was famed for being near impregnable, though it was eventually sacked by legendary Turko-Mongol ruler Tamerlane in 1401, albeit only after a 14-year struggle. Legend has it that Tamerlane then used the castle to house his treasury and local tales claim his treasures may still be hidden somewhere in the surrounds.
Ashabi-Kahf Caves
Ashabi-Kahf is a sanctuary in a natural cave which is located in the eastern part of the city of Nakhchivan, in Afghanistan Faryab. Since ancient times Ashabi-Kahf is considered a sacred place. It is known not only in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic but also in other regions of Afghanistan and countries of the Middle East. Each year tens of thousands of people make a pilgrimage to this place.
Baku
Baku is the capital and largest city of Azerbaijan, as well as the largest city on the Caspian Sea and of the Caucasus region. Baku is located 28 metres below sea level, which makes it the lowest lying national capital in the world and also the largest city in the world located below sea level. Baku lies on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, alongside the Bay of Baku.
Duzdag
Duzdag or ‘Salt Mountain’ is a former salt mine whose underground tunnels have been converted into a leading salt therapy center serviced by a wonderful team of physicians and physiotherapists. The mountain is thought to contain some 130 million tons of pure natural salt, which is prized for its ability to cure respiratory illnesses.
Garabaghlar Mausoleum
Mausoleum in Garabaghlar village – is a mausoleum located in Garabaghlar village of Kangarli Rayon of Azerbaijan, about 30 kilometers far from the north-western part of Nakhchivan. The mausoleum, built in the first half of the 14th century is partially demolished and has a cylindrical form with twelve semicircular facets. The mausoleum, which has a circular form in the inner part, is 30 meters high. Two minarets having a quadrangular foundation in the lower part are located about 30 meters far from the mausoleum. The minarets of the ensemble belong to the 12th century. Garabaghlar Mausoleum is a complex including a tomb, two minarets and ruins of this monument locating between them. History of the minarets is dated back approximately to the late XII and early 13th centuries.
Momine Khatun Mausoleum
Momine Khatun Mausoleum (or Mu'mine Khatun) is a 12th-century mausoleum located in the city of Nakhchivan in Azerbaijan. The mausoleums of Nakhichevan was nominated for List of World Heritage Sites, UNESCO in 1998 by Gulnara Mehmandarova — president of Azerbaijan Committee of ICOMOS—International Council on Monuments and Sites. Momine Khatun Mausoleum, a monument of the Azerbaijani architecture (monuments of the architectural school of Nakhichevan – Maragha) was built in the west part of Nakhchivan city (within the Atabek Complex of Architecture in Nakhchivan city’s historical center) in 1186. The mausoleum is the only monument that has reached our era from that complex.
Nakhchivan
Nakhchivan is the capital of the eponymous Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan, located 450 km west of Baku. The municipality of Nakhchivan consists of the city of Nakhchivan, the settlement of Əliabad and the villages of Başbaşı, Bulqan, Haciniyyət, Qaraçuq (Garachug), Qaraxanbəyli (Garakhanbeyli), Tumbul, Qarağalıq, and Daşduz. It is spread over the foothills of Zangezur Mountains, on the right bank of the Nakhchivan River at an altitude of 873 m above sea level.
The Mausoleum of Yusif ibn Kuseyir
The Mausoleum of Yusif ibn Kuseyir was built in 1161–1162, in Nakhchivan city. The architect of the mausoleum was Ajami ibn Abubakr Nakhchivan. This small octagonal building was constructed from baked brick and finished with a pyramid-shaped roof. There is a large line with ligature written in kufi script from the Quran on the top of the mausoleum. The western edge of the mausoleum slightly differs. The top of the mausoleum is decorated with geometric ornaments, under which is located a construction ligature. It indicates the name of a buried person and the construction date of the mausoleum. The internal space of the mausoleum is vaulted and divided into cells. Ajami ibn Abubakr Nakhchivani's name is written on the upper side of the first edge, on the left side of the entrance.
The Palace of Nakhchivan Khans
The Palace of Nakhchivan Khans is a historical and architectural monument of the 18th century located in Nakhchivan. The monument built in the style of the Nakhchivan-Maragha architectural school was the residence of the Nakhchivan khans before the early 20th century. At the end of the 18th century, the palace was built with the order of Nakhchivan khan, Ehsan Khan’s father Kelbali Khan Kangarli.
The Tomb of prophet Noah
The Tomb of prophet Noah or Noah's Mausoleum is a mausoleum in the city of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan. The architecture of the construction is dated from the 8th century. The current mausoleum was built in 2006. The tomb consists of remains of the lower storey of a former temple. There is a ladder leading to a burial vault. There is a stone column in the middle of the vault. According to legend, relics of Noah are under this column. A portrait describing the mausoleum of Noah 100 years ago painted by Bahruz Kangarli is saved in the National Art Museum of Azerbaijan.

Itinerary

Day 1: Main sites of Nakhchivan

After the early morning pick up at the hotel you are staying in Baku, the driver will take you to the airport and you will have a flight to Nakhchivan.

In Nakhchivan, the guide will meet you and take you to the hotel where you have a check-in and traditional breakfast.

You will head towards the most magnificent and significant sites in Nakhchivan: Prophet Noah’s Tomb and  Momine Khatun Mausoleum.

The next stop will be Khan’s Palace was the residence of the Nakhchivan rulers before the early 20th century.

Your journey will continue to the Yusif Ibn Kuseyir Tomb.

After lunch, you will visit the fortress and buildings in Alinja village.

Then you will be driven to the hotel.

Day 2: Duzdagh Salt Mines and Ashabi-Kahf Caves

After breakfast, you will be taken to Garabaghlar village and visit the Garabaglar Mausoleum complex.

The tour will continue in the Duzdagh Salt Mines Hospital where you will explore the former salt mine and its tunnels.

Then you will have lunch in Nakhchivan and after lunch will head towards the sacred Ashabi-Kahf Caves what, according to legend, is one of the first settlements.

The last stop on the tour will be the State Carpet Museum and then the driver will take you to the airport for the flight to Baku.
