The Cidade Vella or historic quarter of Vigo is centered around the old maritime section near the main port. This area has maintained its historical spirit of the sea with its fish market and neoclassical-style houses.
Known as the “gateway to the Atlantic,” Vigo is a popular port of call for many international tourists each year arriving by cruise ship.
From the Plaza Puerta del Sol, which lies between the Old town and the modern city, we will begin our discovery of Vigo’s old city. Meander through the narrow streets until we reach the San Sebastian Fortress, built in 1665 it boasts a prominent location on the hilltop. It’s viewing platform enables views over to the Cies Islands, nearby seaside villages, and the bateas.
Head away from the views of San Sebastian’s fortress and into the heart of the Old town. It is here where you will find the Collegiate Church. This Spanish religious building was rebuilt in a neo-classical style after it was burnt down in 1585, by the soldiers of Francis Drake.
Navigate through its characteristic streets until we reach the beautiful seaside promenade. Immerse yourself in its vibrant atmosphere and beautiful views.
With your tour now over, you can decide how to spend the rest of your day. Why not take a stroll along the promenade or explore the city on your own before making your own way back to the cruise port, or return with the guide.
Please ensure you leave enough time to make your journey back to the cruise port in plenty of time for your ship’s departure from the port.
