Highlights

Harmonica Alley
A tiny stretch of crisscross, covered lanes on the north side of Kichijoji Station, Harmonica Alley, otherwise known as "Harmonica Yokocho," is at once a symbol of Japanese reinvention and nod to its origins as a flea market early after World War II. Named for the way in which this narrow warren of restaurants, shops and bars resembles harmonica reeds, Harmonica Alley boasts a day versus night personality. Tenants such as cozy clothing stores, a fishmonger trading since the Showa era, and traditional sweets maker operate during the former. Harmonica Alley also runs a monthly Sunday early morning farmer’s market. But it's at night, when red lanterns swing brightly overhead, that Harmonica Alley comes into its own. Popular for after work drinks, its trendy standing-only bars and small but excellent eateries, most of which popped up after the 1990s, quickly become crowded, but never uncomfortably so.
Inokashira Park
Inokashira Park is loved among locals for providing a luscious green space, with plenty of recreational facilities, a shrine, and a bucolic pond. Inokashira Pond is located in the center of the park, where you can hire rowing boats. In the spring, the edge is surrounded by cherry blossom, and the fleeting season of white-pink petals is a great time to come and picnic under the flowers. The park's more rural history is reflected in its rich wealth of greenery, and it's also home to a zoo (main park) and aquarium (secondary park). The Studio Ghibli museum is located in the park too.
Kichijoji Station
Kichijōji Station is a railway station serving Kichijōji in Musashino, Tokyo, Japan. Kichijōji Station is located on the JR East Chūō Main Line, and is served by all-stations Chūō-Sōbu Line services from Chiba and some Chūō Line (Rapid) limited-stop services from Tokyo. It also forms a terminus of the Keio Inokashira Line and is located 12.7 kilometers from the opposing terminus at Shibuya in Tokyo. The station is 14 minutes from Shinjuku and 28 minutes from Tokyo by Chuo Line rapid service, and 23 minutes from Shibuya by Inokashira Line express service.
Statue of Hanako
A popular elephant called Hanako now has a statue in her honor standing outside Kichijoji Station in west Tokyo. The elephant was a resident of Inokashira Park Zoo, which is one of Tokyo’s best animal attractions though often gets overlooked in the rush to see the famous pandas at Ueno Zoo. At the time she died Hanako was the oldest elephant in Japan. A ceremony to mark the unveiling of the bronze statue on May 6th was attended by a member of the Sarasas family from Thailand, which originally gave the animal to Japan. The statue is 1.5 meters tall and 2.5 meters long. It was created by local artist Aki Fueda at a cost of ¥13.6 million, which was covered by donations, including from Thailand.
